Quality/Usability : If you havent already heard about the N5DS/DSN5, you will probably start to hear about it more often. Its a new product...I mean clone of your most recognized flash carts on the market, R4DS R4 Revolution. N5 Revolution's website is even a copy of the R4's website. I even went as far as to contact my source at R4 and hear directly from them as to whether or not this is their product. They have confirmed that this is NOT their product. But is the N5 the same or superior than its original? Thats what we're here to find out and let you know.
The N5 comes packaged with the following items:
1 x USB microSD card reader
1 x N5 SLOT-1 cartridge
1 x Mini installation CD
Like majority of flash carts on the market, they include a mini-CD with firmware files. As always, its best to download from the manufacturers homepage. Not with this product. Trying to download the latest files only gave me 1KB file instead of the ~12MB file.
Since this card is new to the market and the first site to review this product, I wanted to find more information on this card and was unable to. Only information I found was from Chinese wholesalers with different box art and sticker on the N5. Some even claimed this would support microSDHC. But since this is a clone of the R4, there is no support for microSDHC. R4 hasnt even released a new product that supports microSDHC. But to give it a test, I thought I would pop in my 4GB Kingston microSDHC (Japan). I get as far as the "Loading..." screen and it just hangs. So those loyal to R4 and thinks the N5 will have SDHC support, this is not for you.
Since the 4GB microSDHC is a no go, lets try a normal 1GB A-Data microSD (Japan). After transferring the necessary files and a couple of games, I turned on the DS. Wait, whats this?! Looks exactly like what happened with the 4GB microSDHC. Did I do something wrong? So I decided to try a different microSD, this time using my 1GB Kingston microSD (Japan). Copied the same exact files and turned on my DS. Loading screen showed and it went directly to the menu. It worked! So it seems that the N5DS is picky when it comes to microSDs. Whats got me stumped is that since this is a clone of the R4, isnt it suppose to work the same? I had the A-Data card on my M3 Simply and R4 and it worked but not on the N5. Weird.
So once I had the microSD situation figured out, its time to test this clone out. Upon startup, you are greeted with three options; GAMES, MULTIMEDIA and BOOT SLOT-2. When GAMES is selected, the file browser is located on the top screen. This is where all your selecting is done. To navigate through files or to select a file, you use the directional pad to move up and down. Too bad that you cant use the touch pad. The menu looks exactly like the R4 with the exception of some colors and instead of R4 Revolution logo, it has N5 Revolution.
Skinning is setup the same way as the R4. All it takes to change the look of the OS is four simple images and placing it into the "_system_" folder:- logo.bmp -- Background of the Top Screen of N5's Startup.
- icons.bmp -- Background of the Bottom Screen of N5's Startup.
- bckgrd_1.bmp -- Background of the Top Screen of N5's Explorer.
- bckgrd_2.bmp -- Background of the Bottom Screen of N5s Explorer.
Note:
Do not change the picture's name;
Make sure the picture is .bmp format, 8-bit/24-bit;
Make sure the picture is 253*192 pixels.
Is the compatibility with games the same? The first game I tried was Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin since this had problems with certain microSDs but worked fine with my Kingston/A-Data cards. On the R4, the game ran smooth with no lag. However, on the N5 there was severe lag. Other games that I have tried on the N5 didnt seem to have any problems. Cheat database and .sav files are the same as the R4, so you'll be able to transfer your R4 .sav's to the N5.
Homebrew files ran fine on the R4 Revolution and the N5 Revolution ran them fine also.
Conclusion : Overall, the N5 Revolution DS N5DS Card SLOT-1 would be an acceptable temporary solution to the R4 Revolution. This would never replace the famous R4. But if you want an R4 but its sold out everywhere or no longer being carried, the N5 is more readily available and slightly cheaper as a alternative. But I wouldnt use it as my main flash cart. There are better and newer carts available on the market. They even support microSDHC. You would think that a clone would be an exact duplicate or identical in every way even in compatibility but the DSN5 falls short in some areas. For something that is a clone and outdated compared to other flash carts on the market, price should be lower.
What I do like is that Colourful-Zone provides a Quality Check Program. The products that they sell is covered by their 100% Quality Check Program which means that each product has to be passed by their Quality Control Team in order to achieve 0% rate of Dead On Arrival (DOA) to all of their customers.
Colourful Zone (CZ) Version
Quality/Usability : Colourful Zone was nice enough to send us an updated version of the N5 Revolution. This version is not from N5 but has been modified by CZ's professional technical staff. The CZ version fixes known problems such as the freezing "LOADING" screen and some incompatibilities. None of the software has been modified so you can use N5's own files. Only the cartridge itself has been modified to improve on these problems.
As mentioned in the review above, we had issues with our 1GB A-Data microSD. With files loaded onto the microSD and DS turned on, we were presented with the "LOADING" screen. It would not go any further. But having tried the CZ version with the same files and microSD, it solved the loading issue. What I also noticed with the CZ version was that I didnt notice any lag or stutters with games.
Here is what CZ had to say:About the CZ version, it is purely our solution on hardware only. We tried to avoid changing any part of software in order to get the highest compatibility with the latest software from N5. Also, more effort is necessary in modifying the software. Thus, we do not think changing the software is good for both customers and us.
However, with this new version, CZ opted to remove the spring loaded action for the microSD. I think it was better to have the spring loaded action as it was easier to remove the microSD. Now that there is no spring to pop out the microSD, you'll have to try a little hard to get to the microSD since it sits flush with the N5, especially if you have big finger tips.
CZ also had something to say in regards to the microSDs:
Although we can use our all T-Flash memory cards which include Kingston, Toshiba, SanDisk, A-Data, Kingmax and Transcend in CZ version, we found that the speed of accessing using the first 3 brands are normal but using the last 3 brands are very slow. It is due to the limitation of the chips design in N5. Actually, there are 2 modes in accessing SD memory cards according to the SD memory card specification. All other DS cards such as R4, EDGE, DSTT, etc., as we know, are using the normal(fast) method to access the SD memory card but N5 is using the slow method to access the SD memory card. The advantage of this method is the total costs of the cards is lower but the speed is lower as well. Thus, there is no solution on it unless changing the design of N5 chips.
Conclusion : Colourful Zone did a great job of improving the dreaded issues with the N5. This makes it slightly worth it to purchase now. But as mentioned above, I personally preferred the spring loaded microSD slot. To determine which version you have, CZ places a small CZ sticker on the box. They also place 3 more on the cartridge itself (front, back and top). This is overkill. You only need one; front or on top next to microSD slot. So if you're looking to get the N5, CZ is the place to get it as they have fixed the problems no thanks to N5.
With the new fix by CZ, the price tag is considerably high and overpriced compared to other flash carts on the market that work, is more stable and compatible with microSDHC. If this was priced around $25-30, this may attract more attention and interest.

[Acekard R.P.G future function]

Support Action Replay cheat
Quality/Usability : Acekard R.P.G. is not only the first open source flash cart but also the first to offer both onboard flash memory (1GB) and the ability to use microSD as well (SDHC compatible). The acronym for R.P.G. stands for Real Play Gear. Acekard has also released the open source files for the loader but not the firmware itself.
The packaging for the Acekard R.P.G. is nice and comes in a plastic case with instructions included. The case holds the Acekard R.P.G. as well as a GBA cart. The plastic case slips inside a white cardboard sleeve. Shop.01Media includes a mini-USB cable for all your transferring needs.
The cart itself is the same size as a normal DS cartridge but looks wise, it does not. the R.P.G. does not look like your standard flash carts that you see. The Acekard sticker is on the back side rather on the front. On the front or the back, has the Acekard logo molded onto a semi-transparent casing. So when inserting the cart into your DS, instead of the sticker facing out, it will be facing in. What you'll notice immediately is the mini-USB port on the top of the R.P.G., along with a microSD slot. The microSD slot is spring loaded and accommodates both standard microSD and microSDHC cards. Built internally is a flash memory that holds up to 1GB. So you have the option of using the internal memory or microSD slot.
What is mostly unique is the open-source feature. Anyone who is talented or has the knowledge, can modify, customize, improve on or completely redo the loader files for the R.P.G. but they wont be able to touch the firmware files itself. Only Acekard can.
No CD containing files is included. But if you've used flash cart devices before, its best to get the latest files from the homepage. If connecting the R.P.G. to your PC via USB cable, Windows will automatically recognize the device and install the drivers. All you have to do is drag and drop your files. Setting up files is fairly simple. AKMENU4.NDS is the main file system and is located on the root of the NAND/microSD while "__rpg" directory holds languages, skins, DLDI drivers, and other essential system software. R.P.G. support folders so you can place all your homebrew in one folder and DS games in another. Unfortunately, you wont be able to access the microSD slot by using the USB card. You'll need a card reader for the microSD.
The top screen displays handheld name, calendar, time and date. The bottom screen is the file navigator that shows three main icons (Flash Memory, microSD Card and Slot2 Card). The screen can be controlled either with pad/buttons or stylus and lets you choose your files. Like most flash carts, the GUI is skinnable. Acekards forums has some nice looking skins available. The bottom screen also contains folder up icon on the top left allowing you to go back to previous folder, screen brightness on the top right. On the bottom right is an icon that flickers when onboard flash memory/microSD is being accessed and a "Start" button on the bottom left. This is where the options/settings for the GUI reside. You can also access this menu simply by pressing the START button on the DS. In this menu, you have following selections to choose from:
- Copy, Cut, Delete, Paste: allows user to transfer files between the storage options such as NAND to MicroSD, MicroSD to NAND
- Special: enable Download Play, In-Game Cheat, and In-Game Soft Reset (L+R+A+B+DOWN)
- System Settings: change skins, languages, brightness (DS Lite only), allow which files show up in the browser (NDS, NDS+SAV and All), and toggle the ability to trim ROMs
- File Info: shows information on the file selected
- Help: brings up menu showing what functions all the buttons play in the GUI
R.P.G. recognizes .NDS and .SAV files and folders and shows only four files at one time. Selected files will have a pulsating icon. Unknown files will have a question mark beside it.
By now, all flash carts should be 100% ROM compatibility. The R.P.G. also automatically detects saves. There should be no problems what so ever whether it be lag, unable to load or run games. All games we loaded for testing purposes, have loaded and worked fine on both a standard 1GB microSD (Japan) as well as a 4GB microSDHC (Japan). This goes for regular playing as well as multiplayer, download play and WiFi. While both my cards were made in Japan, I did not have a problem with any games. I have experienced with other microSDs that cards made in China or Taiwan tend to have problems. If you can get a card made in Japan, you'll have a better chance of running games.
Majority of the homebrew we tested worked nicely as Acekard R.P.G. supports automatic DLDI patching.
Conclusion : Overall, the Acekard R.P.G. 8G PRO SLOT-1 (1GB) is probably my most favorite flash cart thanks to the dual storage. Not only does it have onboard flash memory but also allows you to use microSDs. So instead of having 1GB, 2GB or 4GB of microSD/HC storage, you have an extra 1GB thanks to the onboard flash memory. Whats also great is the ability to transfer files from flash memory to microSD. Unfortunately, the price of the R.P.G. may hurt your wallet depending on how you look at it and compare it. Its approximately double the price of current Slot-1 flash carts. Then again, it has dual storage and includes a USB cable. Since the R.P.G. case has room for a GBA cart, I wonder if Acekard has something planned.

Quality/Usability : So with the R4DS being highly sought after and the constant backorder, gamers having been searching for other alternatives. I just so happen to stumble upon a new product called DSTT. Some people stated that it was better. Is it better than the almighty R4DS?! Little did I know, the DSTT is actually the same product as the NeoFlash Top Toy DS just rebranded and a whole lot better looking. But to be fair, instead of just copying and pasting the NeoFlash review, I'd start fresh.
My review sample did not come with packaging, instructions, GBA carts/packs or software CD. All I received was the DSTT cartridge and a very small microSD USB Card Reader. There is another package offered that includes GBA Expansion Pak, Rumble Pak and even a USB Nintendo DS Charger. That is the first time I heard a flash cart manufacturer throwing in a USB DS charger. The TTDS didnt even come with one.
Like all flash carts on the market, the size is the same as the original DS cartridge. Unlike some carts on the market, you do not see a protruding chip coming out from the sticker. The DSTT is white and has a spring loading mechanism. The microSD Card Reader itself is very very small compared to others included with different flash carts. But due to the size, removing the microSD can be a pain in the ass.
Set up is the same like any other flash carts. Download the latest system files from DSTT's website, load it onto the microSD along with some games and homebrew and you're ready to go. As mentioned above, since the DSTT is rebranded from the NeoFlash TTDS, you can use NeoFlash's system files on the DSTT and vice versa. You can place your files anywhere even in folders and it will be read. Unfortunately, it does not put your files in alphabetical order but in the order you placed your files in. You're also able to add your own background image which is known as skinning. The included skin is just an image of DSTT's logo.
DSTT uses Action Replay codes for your cheats. To enable cheats, simply press the (+) button or SELECT and choose the cheats you wish to enable for play. You can also enable and disable cheats in-game as well simply by pressing the corresponding buttons: L+R+START+UP (enables cheats); L+R+START+DOWN (disables cheats)
If you're in a game and want to go back to the DSTT menu system, simply press A+B+X+Y+L+R in-game and it will exit the game and goes straight to the menu system.
There is no dedicated Media button like some flash carts such as the M3 or R4, so the Moonshell will be listed with your games/homebrew files.
Speaking of homebrew, all homebrew games are automatically DLDI patched. Just select your homebrew and it will automatically patch it and run your game. No longer do you have to manually do it yourself.
Having tested the DSTT with a 1GB microSD (Japan) and a 4GB microSDHC (Japan), I can say that there was no problems with games that I threw at it. Granted there are so many DS games available, I didnt have a chance to test them all but for the majority that I did, I did not have a problem. All games are saved immediately and directly to your microSD in a .sav format similar to that of the R4 and M3.
Conclusion : Overall, the DSTT DS Top Toy TTDS SLOT-1 may sound new, its actually a rebadged NeoFlash TTDS and different packaging. The DSTT was very sturdy, clean looking and worked how a flash cart should work. The spring mechanism for the microSD was very smooth. Although the microSD Card Reader is probably the smallest I have seen and is cute, removing the microSD can be a pain in the ass due to its very small size. Those looking for an alternative to the R4 or any other flash carts, take a look at the DSTT, it is starting to gain attention and may be the product to look out for.

The invisibleSHIELD has its origins in the military, where it was used to protect high-speed helicopter blades from dust, dirt and debris. Now you can use that same powerful technology to protect your PSP Slim.

So, if it ever does wear or scratch, we will replace it for free, for the life of your device. And if you ever need to remove the invisibleSHIELD, no problem; it comes off clean and leaves no sticky residue.
If you're still not convinced, check out our demo video and see for yourself how strong the invisibleSHIELD™ really is.
Features:- Scratch Proof
- Lifetime Guarantee
- No added bulk
- Improves grip
- Invisible protection
Quality/Usability : With the new release of a smaller and slimmer PSP, I had to jump on it. I loved the original PSP and with the new PSP being slimmer and lighter, it also came in different colors other than black. Granted, the original PSP had black and white (Japan only). In the US, you have black and silver.
Having owned the phat silver DS, I was afraid that the silver PSP my succumb to the same paint chipping. So to protect my investment, thats where invisibleSHIELD comes in. You've probably have either heard of invisibleSHIELD or seen some form of their advertisement such as key scratching ipod, pen trying to go through invisibleSHIELD. They protect everything from your precious iPods, to cellphones to cameras and even your Macbook.
invisibleSHIELD comes in a cardboard box. The box opens up like a tri-fold wallet/folder. On the left side pocket, it holds the invisibleSHIELD (3 sheets) and generic instructions on a piece of paper. The middle also contains generic instructions but printed on the box. The right side holds the squeegee at the top and SHEILDspray at the bottom. The SHIELDspray is just plain water.
I've installed numerous DecalGirl skins on consoles and they were easy. Even if you messed up, peeling and reapplying was easy. So applying the invisibleSHIELD should be an easy walk through the park. Considering the size of the pieces, installation is fairly simple. First, I started off with the front faceplate. They suggest washing your hands so that your fingerprints arent all over the sticky side of the invisibleSHIELD. Next, spray your fingerstips with the SHIELDspray (its basically regular water) and peel the invisibleSHIELD off the paper backing. Once peeled off, hold the invisibleSHIELD in your hands with the adhesive side up. Lightly spray the front (instructions states to spray back also, why? I dont know) of the invisibleSHIELD. DO NOT spray on the PSP itself. Once you have applied water to the invisibleSHIELD. Apply it to your PSP and slide it into place. I lightly sprayed water onto the invisibleSHIELD as there are crevices on the PSP that I do not want water going into. Use the squeegee to push the excess moisture and bubbles away from the center and any openings to the edges. You have to becareful around the buttons, speakers and any open areas. The screen was easy to apply since the faceplate invisibleSHIELD is already in place.
The back contains 4 pieces. One for each side, UMD door and inner circle (PSP logo). I did not use water for this as the pieces were smaller and easier to apply.
Since I'm a perfectionist and a bit anal when it comes to things like this, I didnt have to do much re-adjusting unlike the Macbook invisibleSHIELD. Do remember that when you're peeling the invisibleSHIELD off, the invisibleSHIELD can stretch making it bigger than its suppose to be.
Conclusion : Overall, the ZAGG invisibleSHIELD PSP Slim Lite protected the PSP very well. It covered all of the front and back. The full coverage will cost you $19.95 and the screen only costs $9.95. I personally prefer HORI screen protectors as clings on by static, easy to clean/apply and costs half as much. Although the instructions are generic and the same for all their products, the process is all the same just shaped differently. just But those afraid of getting their PSP scratched should check out invisibleSHIELD.
The Lifetime Guarantee unfortunately only covers the product. They claim its scratch resistant, so if it scratches, they'll replace it. If you mess up, thats user/installer error.
The invisibleSHIELD™ purchase includes a lifetime replacement guarantee. We want you to feel safe and secure when investing in your digital life, and are confident that the invisibleSHIELD™ is the strongest and most durable protection you will find. Purchasing an invisibleSHIELD™ will protect your investment for the life of your device.
The lifetime replacement guarantee is simply what it says. If your invisibleSHIELD™ ever becomes scratched, torn or damaged in any way while protecting your device, we will replace the invisibleSHIELD™ for free, for life.

PS3IR+PWR IR with Power ON/OFF
Manufacturer: Schmartz
Site: Buy from Schmartz
Price: $50.00
Overview : IMPORTANT NOTE: You must enable remote start to enable the power ON feature of this device. Currently, you must pair a PSP device with your PS3 before the remote start option can be enabled. So, you must obtain a PSP (or borrow one temporarily) to enable the power ON feature. However, the power OFF feature will work without remote start mode enabled.
The PS3IR+PWR (Patent Pending) looks exactly like the PS3IRX1 and it runs an upgraded version of the same firmware. I have added the circuit necessary to simulate front panel touch events to allow for turning the PS3 ON and OFF. With this unit, the standard Sony DVD Power IR code can now be used to toggle the PS3 power ON/OFF.
A small sticker must be applied over the front panel [0/1] touch key area. This sticker is connected to the device with a tiny black wire. The sticker has the same [0/1] graphic and matches the color and texture of the original front panel as much as possible. This area can still be touched to manually turn the PS3 ON and OFF. No modification of the PS3 is needed. The sticker can be removed later if desired.
This device accepts PS2 and Sony DVD compatible IR commands and converts them to PS3 game controller key presses via USB.
Plug it in and... It just works!
For best results, program your universal remote control for PS2 mode and/or Sony DVD mode.
Features- Use your universal remote on the PlayStation 3
- Turns ON/OFF your PlayStation 3
- No need for Bluetooth remote, uses IR
- Plug and...use!
- No modification needed
Quality/Usability : Having reviewed the normal PS3IR that is just an adapter, I thought I'd give the "enhanced" version a try. I will be using my Logitech Harmony Advanced Remote which helps me eliminate the amount of remotes laying around. Unfortunately, the PlayStation 3 failed to help the cause. The PS3 does not use infrared (IR) but instead, uses bluetooth. If you are using a IR universal remote, there are different methods of using it.
Sony released their own DVD remote for the PlayStation 2 (model SCHP-10150). When the PS2 first launched, the DVD remote included a IR receiver. As newer PS2's were released, the IR was built in and the dongle was no longer being packaged in. For those that is able to find one or still have the original PS2 DVD remote, you can use IR receiver and a PS2 to PS3 controller adapter, since the PS3 doesnt have PS2 controller port.
Another option is to buy a 3rd party DVD remote that uses IR such as Nyko's Blu-Wave Infrared Remote but you spent all that money for a IR receiver and a remote you wont be using? Unfortunately, none of these options gives you the ability to turn on or off your PlayStation 3 from the comfort of your couch or bed.
Like the PS3IRX1, the PS3IR+PWR is a IR dongle or receiver that connects to the USB port of your PS3 and allows you to use your universal remote but is connected to a sticker that goes over the [0/1] power button on the PS3. As mentioned above, I tested this nifty device with my Logitech Harmony Advanced Remote. To set up the PS3IRX1, simply plug it into any of the USB ports on the front of the PlayStation 3.
Setup is the same as the PS3IRX1. To setup the Logitech Harmony Remote, I simply connected the remote to my computer. Set up an "Activity" and "Device" and chose "Sony PlayStation 2". The reason I didnt choose Sony PlayStation 3 is since the universal remote does not use Bluetooth, choosing the PS3 wouldnt work and even Logitech says that the remote would not work. Choosing the PS2 also gives that message but ignore this message as their database is a bit outdated. If you are using a more complex and advanced controller, you are able to enter HEX codes to your controller.
Choosing the PS3 instead of the PS2 only caused problems since none of the buttons really worked for me. Choosing the PS2, all the buttons were mapped. FF, RR, Chapter Skips, Play, Pause, Menu, etc. all worked without problems. What makes the PS3IR+PWR is its special feature. Yes! The ability to turn on and off your PS3. Other 3rd party remotes whether it be universal or dedicated PS3 remotes dont have the ability to power on and off your PS3 unless its Sony's Bluetooth Remote. This "hack" does not require any modding, soldering, tools and does not void your warranty. Well, I lied. The only "tool" you need is a Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP). Its as crucial as your universal remote as it is needed to help you remotely start your PlayStation 3.
To setup your PlayStation3 for remote power on/off, you must go to the Settings Menu > Remote Play Settings > and register your Sony PSP. I know not everyone has a PSP but you have to know at least one friend or family who owns one. If you dont have access to a PSP, you can try and rent a PSP from Blockbuster or any store that offers this type of service. As mentioned above, you'll need the PSP to enable the Remote Start function. Once the PSP has been registered, turn on the Remote Start setting from the same menu as above and the Remote Start setup is complete.
You're not done yet. That was just the easy part. Now its time for the hardware modification. This mod requires you to place a piece of copper over the PS3 control panel. Simply stick the larger copper piece over the [0/1] power button on the PlayStation3 and rub it. You'll see an indentation of the [0/1] on the copper. This is where it can get a little frustrating even though it looks easy. Take the thing piece of copper that is attached to the PS3IRX1 via wires and place half of it over the large copper piece that you applied to the PS3 previously. So instead of touching the [0/1] panel to turn it ON/OFF, the information is sent from the remote to the PS3IRX1, through the wires and a slight charge onto the copper pieces which tricks it into thinking it was touched. If for whatever reason you are unable to power ON/OFF your PS3 with the remote start, re-adjust the thin copper piece.
Conclusion : Overall, the PS3IR+PWR IR with Power ON/OFF is a great product. Installation is very easy, does not require any modification or tools. It doesnt even void your warranty. Setting up your universal remote is very easy and will work. Have problems or questions? The support that AVSForums as well as from Mike Muecke (owner/designer), provide excellent customer support. People are willing to help, give tips and Mike is there every step of the way until you get your problems fixed.
Like the PS3IRX1 which is priced at $35.00, the PS3IR+PWR IR is priced at $50.00 and is a bit pricey considering you can get a PS3 Bluetooth Remote for $25.00 and even as low as $20.00. Hopefully, the price will go down. Even at $40, I think it would be more reasonable.

Wlip Solderless Wii Modkit
Review by: souLLy
Manufacturer: Wlip
Site: N/A
Price: 24.95€
Overview: Wlip is an adaptor that has been designed especially to install any Modchip in your Wii in a faster and easy way and without damage for your console, because there is no need for welding. You can install it yourself without any technical procedure in a few minutes,
There are two models of Wlip: Model A is used for normal leg Wiis and Model B works with cut leg Wiis. For D2C chips there are not any Wlip yet, but we are working on it. Wlip can support any Modchips models except the ones for D2C.
Quality/Usability : I've wanted to get my Wii chipped for quite some time, the thought of some tasty Gamecube homebrew and the possibility of future Wii homebrew is a very tempting proposition. If you're like me and 99% of the population though that isn't too handy with a soldering iron, you're left with very little choice, send your beloved console along with a chunk of cash to some anonymous person who advertises on an Internet forum- not for the feint hearted, or buy a Wlip.
A Wlip is a small plastic device that clips onto your Wii's motherboard that you can fit a Wii modchip into, essentially a Wii modchip that doesn't require any soldering! Not only that but if you decide you don't want to use that chip any more you can just as easily take the Wlip out of your console with the minimum of fuss or risk. On paper then it's a very enticing proposition. At the moment it's only for earlier model Wiis; people who need D2C chips are out of luck at the moment, the official Wlip site says they're on the way though so keep an eye out if you're interested.
The modchip I chose was the Wiinja Deluxe, I grabbed mine from Futura Videogames which is an official reseller of the Wiinja chip so I could be certain it was genuine. At £23 including delivery it was fairly reasonable but be sure to hunt around for a good deal. To open your Wii you'll need a tri-wing screwdriver, I grabbed mine from DealExtreme for about 75p with free delivery, bargain!
Installation : Take your Wlip and insert your modchip into the space provided, it should be a reassuringly snug fit. Next you need to disassemble your Wii. This was no great problem, there's a number of guides around that help you find where all the screws are hidden, after that it's a few screws inside and disconnecting two ribbon cables - if you're careful you can do all of this without doing any cosmetic damage to your case.
Next firmly push your Wlip over a chip on the exposed Wii board, I watched the video on the official Wlip site to be certain it was in the right place, although it is obvious. Now it took me 5 or 6 times of doing this, reassembling my Wii and testing it before it would boot unsigned discs for me, I was definitely beginning to panic, so I didn't fit into the 'you can fit it in 10 minutes' category, however it did work in the end, perfectly well, so you may need to persevere to get good results.
Conclusion : Generally pretty good. Once it worked, it worked very well, which is the main thing, I didn't destroy my Wii and if I ever want to remove it it'll be a breeze. There are some obvious down sides though – the fact that I had to try a few times before it would work shows that this kind of mod will never be as stable as a soldered chip- but if you can solder, you're not reading this review right? Also it is slightly pricey for what it is, particularly with no sites doing any kind of bundle packages at the moment.
I guess overall if you're anything like me though, you want a modded Wii, you can't solder and don't know anyone else that can, you have a few Euros hanging around and are brave enough to open your Wii's case you could do a whole lot worse than picking one up. Especially with the Wii scene heating up!
