Nintendo Announces New Wii Remote Jacket Accessory

Posted By: bandit

PRESS RELEASE: REDMOND, Wash., Oct. 1, 2007 – Nintendo announces the Wii Remote Jacket, a durable, silicone cover for the Wii Remote™ that provides a variety of benefits for the player. Nintendo will include the Wii Remote Jacket with all Wii™ hardware systems and with all Wii Remotes sold separately or packaged with Wii Play™. Hardware featuring the Wii Remote Jacket will begin shipping to retailers on Oct. 2 and is expected to be on retail shelves the week of Oct. 15.

The Wii Remote Jacket provides cushioning for the Wii Remote for people who might accidentally throw or drop their Wii Remotes while playing games. Use of the Wii Remote Jacket is meant to supplement, not replace, the basic game-play instructions: keep a firm grip, don’t let go of the controller, use the wrist strap and make sure your play area is free of people or objects. The Wii Remote Jacket also serves as a cover for the Wii Remote. Nintendo recommends players use the new Wii Remote Jacket as a cushiony shield, though the current Wii Remote is a safe product when used properly.

“We’re always looking for ways to improve our products and make sure everyone has a safe and fun experience,” says George Harrison, Nintendo of America’s senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. “Many electronics manufacturers provide similar protective covers for products like cell phones, PDAs and MP3 players.”

Current Wii owners who want to equip their Wii Remotes with the new Wii Remote Jacket free of charge can go to Wii.com or nintendo.com, or call 1-866-431-8367 to place an order. Nintendo will begin taking orders on Oct. 2, and Wii Remote Jackets will begin shipping the week of Oct. 15.

The Wii Remote Jacket is designed to be added and removed easily, in case users want to slip their Wii Remote into an accessory like the upcoming Wii Zapper™.

Those in the US/Canada can register their Wii, here. Those in Latin America can register their Wii, here. You are able to request up to four (4) jackets per Wii.

Sony Won’t Bring PSP Slim S-Video Cables To U.S.

Posted By: bandit

While they’re available in Japan and elsewhere, Sony has decided not to offer S-video cables for its new PSP Slim handheld in North America. Why not? A company representative told us that they wanted to streamline their selection, giving owners a choice between cables supporting composite, “the de facto standard,” and component inputs, which are now available on the majority of new televisions. Those S-video lovers among you all will have to take a stand. Either way, it’ll set you back $19.99—for once, picking the deluxe option won’t cost more. Unlike the first version of the PSP, the revised PSP Slim is capable of outputting video signals to compatible televisions, letting users watch media on larger displays. The PSP Slim can output game video on televisions, too, but only through the component cable. (The system’s output is in a progressive-scan mode, which other cables don’t support.) Additionally, the PSP Slim is less bulky and lighter than the original and is more battery efficient.

RIP Nyko Party Station

Posted By: bandit

We first mentioned the Nyko Party Station back in July. For those that dont remember, it was a base that lets you recharge your controllers but at the same time, hold your beverages had a tray to hold your potato chips or junk food, hand cooler, LCD score counter and many more features. It was to retail for $24.99.

According to an email from Nyko, the components were too expensive for their desired price point-- they would have had to charge $50 or more instead of $25.

Now what will we have to get our gaming and feeding needs all in one?

Review: Wii Wireless Sensor Bar

Posted By: bandit

Wii Wireless Sensor Bar
Review by: TrialSword
Provided by: DCEmu Reviews

Manufacturer: Dragon
Site: Buy from GameInfinity
Price: $9.95

Overview : Experience the freedom of wireless gaming with wireless sensor bar for the Nintendo Wii. This wireless Wii remote receiver can be placed anywhere in the room for cable-free gaming up to 25' away.

Features:
  • Infrared technology detects pointer and motion movements up to 25 feet away
  • No wires of any sort are needed
  • 6 AA batteries provide hours of use (not included)
  • Perfect for home theater setups with wall mounted TVs or complicated cabling
  • Dimension: 9 inch x 1.6 inch x 1.6 inch
Quality/Usability : A nightmarish jungle of wires and plugs plague the back end of any home entertainment center with multiple components, and if you're like me you'd love to alleviate the problem at any opportunity. The Wii's wireless remotes are a lot of fun to wave around, but the sensor bar is tethered to your Wii by a thin wire, yet another addition to your teeming throngs of black cables. The solution here is simple, a wireless sensor bar to match your already wireless controllers! Game Infinity provides such a solution, but is it more trouble than it's worth?

Just at a glance, there are a few notable differences between the stock wired sensor bar and this wireless bar. For one, it's much, much larger. About three times the height and twice the depth of the original. The IR sensors rest at the top, and the power button and power LED lay under it. Why all the extra real estate? The answer is batteries. This baby takes SIX AA batteries to operate. That's right, six batteries. It all seems like way too much and for some might be a dealbreaker.

I used the wireless bar for a number of functions, including the Virtual Console, Wii games and web browsing. The bar did its relatively simple task rather well, and I didn't lose any signal or run out of battery for the 6 hours I used it for this review's purposes. Metroid Prime 3 and Warioware, 2 motion heavy games, performed excellently, with no difference in performance between the wireless bar and Nintendo's original. There are some gripes, however, most notably the size of the bar making its options for positioning far more limited. Some flat panel TV's will simply not be able to support the sensor bar on top. If the TV is mounted to a wall you'll be hard pressed to find a decent location, unless there's a stand below it. Another problem is the power LED. It shines a bright blue when the power is turned on, making it quite distracting.

Conclusion : Overall, as far as a wireless sensor bar goes, I can't help but feel like they could have made it much smaller, less intrusive, and less power consuming. Six AA batteries seems like way too much and makes it way too big. It performs well, though, and if you absolutely need it to be wireless, e.g. the Wii is far away from the TV or you have a projection setup, it's not bad, especially for the low price tag.

The Good: Performs well, is wireless, design matches Wii colors
The Bad: Takes six AA batteries, large size makes it difficult to place in some circumstances, distracting power LED
The Bottom Line: Unless you REALLY need a wireless setup, I'm not sure it would be worth the trouble with Game Infinity's wireless sensor bar, though the low price makes it tempting.

Review: Wii LAN Network Adapter

Posted By: bandit

Wii LAN Network Adapter
Review by: cowdisease
Provided by: DCEmu Reviews

Manufacturer: N/A
Site: Buy from GameInfinity
Price: $19.95

Overview : You’ve got a Nintendo Wii. You have a broadband internet connection on your PC. You’ve heard about all the fun things you can do online with your console. Yet when it comes to connecting your Wii to the net, you don’t know where to start. With our amazing new LAN Adapter for the Nintendo Wii, you can create a wired high-speed internet connection for your console. Just plug the Adapter into your Wii's USB port, and then connect it to your PC’s DSL or Cable modem or your router using a network cable. It’s as simple as that! It's USB 2.0, taking advantage of the latest, fastest USB protocols.

Because Wii LAN Adapter uses a cable connection, it always offers high-speed, reliable data transfer speeds. It’s ideal for places where wireless connectivity isn't possible, perhaps because of thick walls or interference from other products, and it's faster than any WiFi connection. At last, you can enjoy uninterrupted online gaming!

Features:
  • Creates a high-speed LAN Internet connection for your Nintendo Wii
  • No wireless network required
  • Connects to your existing PC connection or DSL modem
  • USB 2.0 connection supports the Wii at full speed
Quality/Usability : I applauded Nintendo when they announced that their newest console, the Wii, would come equipped with wireless networking capabilities directly out of the box. “Hooray!” I thought, “I won’t have to pay an obscene amount of money to get an overpriced wireless adapter to connect my Wii to my stunning wireless network!” Instead, Nintendo did it backwards, leaving out the usual wired Ethernet port, so if you are one of the many people who have not yet set up their home with a wireless network (or if you are like me and don’t like dealing with the hassle of wireless network security and dropped connections) then you have to buy this regularly priced wired adapter.

It will cost you $24.99 plus shipping and handling to rectify this omission if you buy through Nintendo’s online store, a price that is comparable to other PC-only USB LAN adapters on the market. The package is as bare-bones as it can be, containing simply the one-piece adapter, a single folded instruction sheet, and a small CD containing PC drivers.

Hooking your Wii up is as simple as the pictures on the back of the box suggest. Simply plug the USB end of the adapter into one of the two slots in the rear of your Wii, plug your Ethernet cable into the adapter, and turn your Wii on. The only remaining step is to go into your Wii’s settings and change the connection settings to “wired” from the default “wireless” option. The one-page instruction sheet has clear, illustrated instructions that will walk you through this simple process, and after a short automated test your Wii will be connected to the internet. The length of the entire process from opening the box to being connected depends mostly on how good you are at opening boxes.

The USB cable on the adapter is about five inches long, just long enough to rest flat on any surface if you have the Wii oriented vertically. The body is about an inch thick and three inches long, so it is not as compact as some of the other adapters of this type on the market, so while it can be used for your laptop it is not ideally suited for portability. It is the same color and shape as the Wii’s power brick so it is aesthetically consistent with the rest of the Wii gear. When plugged in two unlabeled, red LED’s indicate that it is functioning.

The PC setup is also fairly simple, as you can plug and go. However if your computer does not automatically install your adapter properly you will have to deal with the driver disc. When the disc is inserted it simply opens an explorer window that shows the various files containing the different drivers. There are no auto-prompts here, but once you select the proper drivers the install is quick and automatic. The disc supports a wide variety of operating systems: Linux, Windows Vista and XP in 32 and 64 bit, CE, ME, 98, and Mac OSX 10, and works flawlessly.

Conclusion : Overall, if you need or want to wire your Wii to the internet the adapter is reasonably priced, quick and easy to use, even if it is a little bulky. If you want to get over your resentment at Nintendo leaving out a basic component that will cost you thirty dollars, go get yourself some ice cream.

Review: CycloWiz Modchip v2 (DMS/D2A/D2B)

Posted By: bandit

CycloWiz Modchip v2 (DMS/D2A/D2B)
Manufacturer: Team Cyclops
Site: Buy from Divineo
Price: $30.00-$40.00

Overview : The CycloWiz Wii Mod Chip has been updated to be universally compatible with all current Wii drive chipsets including DMS, D2A and D2B.

The amazing CycloWiz Mod Chip for the Nintendo Wii has arrived! The CycloWiz is possibly the easiest modchip to install on any system. A quicksolder pattern on the PCB board removes the need for wires. All you need to do us solder onto the designated parts and the installation is complete.

Not only is the CycloWiz easy to install, but this ModChip also has amazing features including Stealth Mode, the ability to play both WII and Gamecube backups, GameCube homebrew and imports. The CycloWiz also has an optional LED to let you know when the Mod Chip is ON or OFF.

Features :

  • Compatible with all current Wii chipsets including the DMS, D2A and D2B
  • Fully upgradable via DVD
  • Easy installation(5 solder points / no wires required)
  • Stealth Mode to keep the Mod Chip from ever being detected by the current Wii firmware
  • Play both Wii and GameCube backup copies
  • Play GameCube homebrew and Imports
  • Built In audio-fix for GameCube backup copies
  • Multidisc GameCube game support
  • Supports both 8cm and 12cm discs
  • Optional disable feature to turn the Mod Chip ON or OFF
  • Multipurpose LED to let you know that the CycloWiz Mod Chip is on and working, if there is an error, or if it is off
Quality/Usability : This review is an updated review based off of our CycloWiz v1 (DMS/D2A) - 3.0B FW review that worked only on DMS and D2A chipsets. This review is based on a North American (NTSC-US) Wii. All games tested during this review, we own the original games. This modchip is only compatible with Wii's that have a DMS, D2A or D2B chipset. This will NOT work on a D2C chipset.

Like CycloWiz v1, this modchip will work on DMS, D2A and now, D2B chipsets. This will not work on D2C chipsets as the structure has changed and did not allow the use of modchips. If you bought your Wii after June 2007, it probably contains a D2C chipset. You can find out what your Wii probably has by using this Wii Tracker.

The CycloWiz comes in a ESD bag but does not provide any protection during shipping (unless retailer protects it). The CycloWiz is basically a chip on a small thin PCB. The solder pads allows you to either quick soldering or wire installation. Wire installation is the best way to go because if for whatever reason you need to remove it, it is a lot easier and cleaner. Team Cyclops also started to include a switch with all CycloWiz's

Installation : Before installing the CycloWiz, you must have at least some experience with soldering and have read their instruction manual which can be downloaded from here. As for me, I dont have any experience with soldering, so I had a friend install this for me. In order to install the CycloWiz onto your Wii, you must take it apart. Here is a tutorial on how to dismantle your Wii. You can also find other tutorials or even videos on the web.

Once you have dismantled the Wii, you must locate the points outlined in their installation manual. These points are where you will connect the soldering between the Wii and the CycloWiz. When soldering, you must remember to stay within the points and not to use too much solder or you may risk shorting out the chip as well as the Wii. When soldering the CycloWiz, you also have the option of installing 3 more wires which is then connected to a switch. The switch that is included is a flip switch but any type of switch will do whether it be a push-in switch or a flip switch but the smaller the better. You can install the switch anywhere you want. It can be in the vent at the bottom of the Wii or you can drill a hole into the casing of the Wii, whichever is more convenient to you. This switch will enable you to upgrade your CycloWiz via DVD.

On the CycloWiz, there is an LED that will light up if you’ve installed the chip correctly. You would want to try the Wii out before closing it up by hooking the Wii back together without the casing or you will not be able to view the LED. This is a great way to tell you whether or not your installation was successful or not without having to reopen your Wii later on.

Wii Compatibility : With Team Cyclops constantly improving the CycloWiz, game compatibility has improved dramatically. There were less and less DRE's (Disk Read Errors), sometimes even none at all. Playing imports is still a hit or miss when it comes to playing on a different region. Some games will work and some games will not. But if you're playing in the same region such as NTSC-US (North America) and NTSC-J (Japan), there is not problem.

Homebrew Compatibility : Loading homebrew is still the same as v1. There are three ways to load GameCube homebrew; bootable disc, SDLoad and GCOS. Loading via SDLoad, you will need a SD Gecko adapter as well as an SD card. If using GCOS or a bootable disc, you can load the emulators and games on to a DVD and be able to load from them without having to use additional media. All emulation worked without a problem.

Conclusion : Overall, CycloWiz Modchip v2 (DMS/D2A/D2B) is the same as CycloWiz v1 (DMS/D2A) - 3.0B FW but with the support of D2B chipset. With Nintendo cracking down on piracy by changing the layout of the mobo and chipsets, its been a little hard on some gamers. Not to mention with the raids on some modders and closing of sites, its been tough of modchip makers, mainly on online retailers. If you didnt purchase a Wii after June, you should be safe but it depends on how fast sells their stock and it gets replenished. The more they sell, the more systems they'll get and probably with new chipsets. I think the main concern right now, is the ability to play 100% of import games. Even if its 90%, its well worth it.

Please note that none of the "upgrade" products listed in this site are endorsed by Nintendo, Sony and/or Microsoft. DCEmu Reviews and DCEmu Network does not condone piracy. The primary functions of a "modchip" and/or "flashcart" are to allow you to play imported games and homebrew software that you legally own or simply just for experimenting with hardware. We in no way endorse piracy, and encourage all users to do the right thing and support the developers/manufacturers that support them. We do not take any responsibilities for any use outside of these parameters or where the use of such a device is illegal.

Review: WiiKey Modchip (DMS/D2A/D2B)

Posted By: bandit

WiiKey Modchip (DMS/D2A/D2B)
Manufacturer: WiiKey
Site: Buy from Mod-Chip
Price: $30.00-$40.00

Overview : The amazing WiiKey Mod Chip for the Nintendo Wii has arrived! The WiiKey is possibly the easiest modchip to install on any system. A quicksolder pattern on the PCB board removes the need for wires. All you need to do us solder onto the designated parts and the installation is complete.

Not only is the WiiKey easy to install, but this ModChip also has amazing features including Stealth Mode, the ability to play both WII and Gamecube backups, GameCube homebrew and imports. The WiiKey also has an optional LED to let you know when the Mod Chip is ON or OFF.

Features :

  • Direct boot of wii backups
  • Direct boot of GC backups
  • Direct boot of homebrew in GC mode
  • Supports all currently available console/drive versions
  • Supports D2B chipsets
  • Sophisticated (true) update mechanism via DVD (future proof, expect cool features to come)
  • Direct boot of different NTSC region Wii games/backups on US and JAP consoles
  • Partial support for NTSC region Wii games/backups on PAL consoles
  • Boots different region GC games/backups (partially without swapping)
  • Supports multi-disc games for BOTH Wii and Gamecube
  • Supports DVD-R / true DVD+R and +RW support (no bitsetting required!)
  • Improved readsettings for recordable media
  • Built-in audio fix
  • Supports fullsize 4GB discs for gamecube homebrew
  • Stealth mode
  • 512 byte EEPROM to store configuration
  • Quicksolder interface - no wires required
  • Unique disc backup application via sdcard
  • Compact design, best quality components, rock solid high speed controller
  • Professional ESD packing
  • Recovery mode - Can recover from a bad flash
Quality/Usability : WiiKey is probably one of the most well known modchips for the Wii. Its so popular that there is even a clone of it. To prevent confusion, WiiKey tried to think of ways to inform buyers that what they are buying is legit and the real deal. Their solution was a hologram sticker. But this didnt stop some buyers as the clones also worked the same as the real WiiKey.

This review is based on a North American (NTSC-US) Wii. All games tested during this review, we own the original games. This modchip is only compatible with Wii's that have a DMS, D2A or D2B chipset. This will NOT work on a D2C chipset.

Installation : You can find installation manual at WiiKey's Resource page. The Resource page also includes setup discs, recovery disc and the much anticipated firmware update disc which I will get to later.

In order to install the CycloWiz onto your Wii, you must take it apart. Here is a tutorial on how to dismantle your Wii. You can also find other tutorials or even videos on the web.

Like all other modchips that requiring soldering, you must dismantle the Wii. The WiiKey also allows you to either install via quick solder or wire method (the latter method is preferred as you can remove the chip easily). Once you have dismantled the Wii, you must locate the points outlined in their installation manual. These points are where you will connect the soldering between the Wii and the WiiKey. When soldering, you must remember to stay within the points and not to use too much solder or you may risk shorting out the chip as well as the Wii.

After installing the WiiKey, you must run the WiiKey configuration disc which can be download from WiiKey.

Wii Compatibility : After running the configuration disc, its time to test out games. With some modchips that we reviewed, there were some games that gave the DRE (Disc Read Error), but taking that same disc and trying it on the WiiKey worked and booted up perfectly. But there were some that didnt work.

Homebrew Compatibility : Unfortunately, I wasnt able to try the homebrew out.

Conclusion : Overall, WiiKey modchip came through and worked. The ability to load games had a higher success rate than majority of the Wii modchips on the market. Not to mention, its one of, if not the smallest Wii modchip on the market!

1.9b Firmware Upgrade Disc
Now, remember when I talked about the WiiKey update disc? Well, WiiKey was suppose to release this upgrade a long long long time ago but kept delaying it. They would give a release date and would delay it for whatever reason. This would annoy and piss of WiiKey users and even other gaming sites for the lack of actually following through on their word and releasing. Some speculated that WiiKey was a flake or lying. Some even thought they were trying to combat the clones and trying to figure out how to get the upgrade disc to only work on genuine chips and possibly brick Wii's that have clones installed..but of course, all this was a rumor.

There was a leak of the supposed upgrade disc but it was a beta. Eventually, after further testing, WiiKey decided to make it an official release as it was stable enough and worked as it should. The following is what was added to 1.9b
  • audiofix fixed
  • dual layer support (no bitsetting required)
  • improved media support (all supported chipsets)
  • full Gamecube regionfree (no-swap/video setup)
  • various "smaller" improvements/fixes
  • workaround for FW 3.0 gameid limitation
  • (existing wkb 1.2 discs will boot again)
  • "on the fly" settings for gc games (by holding buttons)
  • toggle audiofix, diskspeed, force NTSC/PAL
To get GameCube full-regionfree feature on 1.9b firmware, you'll need to download Configuration Disc 1.3

D2CKey modchip for Wii with D2C chipsets

Posted By: bandit

I'm a little late on posting this as I wasnt sure if this was a fake or not but I just got word that D2Ckey is from the team behind WiiKey.

D2Ckey is the first modchip to work on D2C chipsets on Wii's. Previous modchips did not work on newer Wii's. It requires 31 wires and 2 jumps to be soldered. NEOASIC has found an alternative solder points. You can take a look at the installation here.
Technical Specifications:
Access control LEDs
  • LED 1: disc access indicator.
  • LED 2: data patching indicator
    • Flashes smoothly during disc insertion and detection
    • Lit when backup is detected (after disclogin)
    • Off when original is detected
DVD media compability
  • DVD+-R
  • DVD+-RW
  • Dual-layer DVD (movies and GCOS)
Game disc support
  • Direct boot of Wii original and backup games from the same region
  • Direct boot of Gamecube original and backup games from the same region
  • Direct boot of different NTSC region Wii and GC games on USA and JAP consoles
  • Partial region free support on Wii and GC original and backup games with different videomode (ie PAL<->USA, JAPAN)
  • Improved readsettings for recordable media
  • Supports running GC games at Wii diskspeed
  • GC Audiostreaming Fix
  • Supports full-size DVD and DVD9 discs for GC homebrew
  • Supports GC multigame discs
  • Supports Wii and GC multidisc games
True stealth mode
  • Does not modify RAM, making it virtually undetectable for the Wii
  • Full command set emulation

It Works
D2CKey has been designed with user simplicity in mind. After installation (which, in all fairness, should be left to a professional!), it just works. There is no need to set up, reflash, upgrade, or fiddle around. D2Ckey automatically detects what kind of disc is inserted, and configures the drive accordingly. Original and backup original Wii and Gamecube games from different regions with the same video system boots directly, and even a lot of games from regions with different video system can be booted directly. Gamecube audiostreaming fix is built-in from the start.

Use With All Kinds of Media
Compatible with most DVD+/-R and RW media (no bitsetting required) and multigame discs.

DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, Dual Layer DVD, bitsetting... finding the right recordable media and the right burner isnt always that easy. Some kinds and brands of media and recorders might work better with the Wii drive than others. D2Ckey offers support for most of them from the start, making it simpler for you. While a certain media, burner, or combination might not work properly with a certain drive, it will be easier to find a working combination knowing that d2ckey supports most of the common recordable media types.

Hottest Chip / Coolest Core
350MHz Performance with advanced AES128 bit encryption, yet runs on an ultra-low-power core.

The overall system performance of D2Ckey is 350Mhz, compared to around 8MHz for serial-port based modchips.

D2Ckey uses the latest flash-based FPGA technology from Actel, which has many powerful features. It has a super-fast, ultra-low-power 1.5V core that will literally remain cool all the time. This means no strain on your Wii (and there is no need recalculate your carbon footprint).

Another powerful feature is that the programming is protected by powerful AES128 encryption, making reverse engineering attempts infeasible. Therefore it will be very difficult to find a way to detect or block the chip in any way in the future. In the past modchips and smartcards using less secure devices have eventually been hacked, making it possible to detect them and lock out modified systems. An example of this are self-updating d2mac and Conax unofficial satellite tv cards, whose MK's have been revoked, rendering the card inoperable.

Intelligent Code Modifying System
Integrates a next-generation ICMS to ensure stability during loading and gameplay.

The first generations of Wii drive controllers - known as DMS, identical to D2A, and D2B all had a serial port interface that could be used to inject code, making it possible for backup discs to load (and enable other funky stuff as well).

Albeit easy to install, modchips that uses the serial port have some disadvantages. Due to the way they interact with the drive controller it is possible for the Wii hardware to detect them (they modify RAM, for example).

This way of modifying the Wii does not work with the D2C controller, because the serial port can no longer be used to inject or modify code.

D2Ckey uses a new approach we call the Intelligent Code Modifying System (ICMS). Instead of just uploading some code and then doze off, ICMS constantly monitors data on address and data buses, patching it if necessary. This has several advantages:
  • It is virtually undetectable by the Wii hardware
  • Improved reading of recordable recordable media
  • Backup disc loading will emulate original game disc loading closer
By interfacing more of the circuitry of the drive controller D2Ckey has a better understanding of what is going on inside. Stability and compability have been the main design objectives.

A good example of the dangers with oversimplified chips are the 4-wire PIC12C508-based PS1 modchips that where very popular around 1997. First, Microchip, the manufacturer of PIC chips, made some changes in the manufacturing process, affecting the in-system clock. This was technically not a manufacturing flaw, as the fault was still within the tolerance specified in the datasheet, but the chips stopped working. If the 5th wire, a clock signal from PS1, had not been stripped (the 5-wire modchips still using the PS1 clock did not have any problems) then there would not have been any problems. Shortly after games appeared that detected active modchips - once again, a few extra wires would have enabled the chip to know when (and when not to) send data.
They currently have an installation guide available.

Review: PSP Slim & Lite Component Cable

Posted By: bandit

PSP Slim & Lite Component Cable
Manufacturer: N/A
Site: Buy from GameInfinity
Price: $14.95

Overview : PSP Slim & Lite Component AV Cable allows to display videos, photos and play music as well as games on TV.

Features:
  • Enables AV output via Component
  • Cable length: 2.5m
  • Aluminum alloy housing cuts out any unwanted RF signals.
  • Suitable only for the new Slim Series (PSP-2000).
  • Allow you to display videos, photos and play music as well as games on TV
  • For playing games, a TV with progressive scan support is required
Quality/Usability : One of the nicest additions to the PSP Slim & Lite is the video-out function that enables you to watch video, play games and view photos from your PSP on to your TV.

Following on the heals on newly released consoles are 3rd party manufacturers. The moment something new comes out...BAM! They already have products at online import stores/wholesalers. When the PSP Slim & Lite was released, component cables were hard to come by as some stores didnt receive any in stock.

The quality of the cables are decent. The biggest complaint about the PSP's video-out feature is that in order to play games, you'll need a TV that has progressive scan. If you dont have a progressive scan compatible TV, you'll be left with only looking at videos and photos.

Once you have selected the PSP's output setting, the image displayed on the TV does not fill it completely but is bigger than we expected. On my 32-inch LCD, it measured approximately 22-inches. Although this can be bothersome or nitpicking to some, once we got into the gameplay, we didnt really notice the size of the display compared to the TV.

Images were a little different and washed out compared to that of what is shown on the PSP screen. Taking a small image that is use to being displayed on the PSP's screen and blowing it up onto a monitor, you'll notice the jaggies on objects and textures. This is probably due to the fact that you're also sitting close to the TV as the length of the cable isnt really long to begin with.

Conclusion : Overall, the PSP Slim & Lite Component Cable works well for an aftermarket product. Colors and images could use better quality. The noticeable jaggies was expected since you're scaling up an image. The price tag of $14.95 is fairly reasonable as its only $5.00 less than the official cables.

There is also a video showing the XCM 1080p VGA Box allowing you to hook up the PSP Slim component cable and be able to play on a VGA monitor. You can read the news here and our full review on the XCM 1080p VGA box here.

Review: Talismoon HDMI Switcher with Remote

Posted By: bandit

Talismoon HDMI Switcher with Remote
Manufacturer: Talismoon
Site: Buy from ConsoleShop
Price: $105.00-$129.95

Overview : The HDMI SWITCHER is a HDMI HUB that allows you to connect your console or dvd player to a tv and easily switch from a device to another with a simple remote control press.

Simply pressing a button on the remote you can select your desired HDMI source to be routed to a high definition display. Switcher is tested to guarantee resolution up to 1080p without signal degradation.
HDMI repeater is built in to the switch for long output cables. If your cable if over 15ft distance then with regular switch you would get signal degradation. However with HDMI switch box signal can be amplified to go over 60ft!

Features :
  • Approved by HDMI ATC lab
  • Fully supports 1080P HDTV
  • HDCP Compliant
  • Supports DTS, Dolby 7.1 Channel Audio
  • GOLD PLATED CONNECTORS
  • IR Remote control
  • Expand 4HDMI sources on your HDTV device
  • Amplifier & Equalizer function enables longer HDMI cables
  • Plug & Play, installs in seconds
  • RoHS compliant
  • 110v-240v auto switching power supply
  • HDMI CABLE INCLUDED
Quality/Usability : The Talismoon HDMI Switcher with Remote is designed to allow you, the user, to toggle between four (4) HDMI sources. You may think why would you need or want something like this. If you havent noticed, as more and more devices such as HDTV's, HD cable, satellite boxes, DVD players (Blu-Ray and HD-DVD), they are now incorporating HDMI. As more people get into high def, they will have more and more devices but are only limited to a certain amount of inputs on their devices.

The HDMI Switcher measures approximately 7 inches wide by 3 inches deep and 1 inch high. The switcher is made of metal and not plastic. This makes the switcher very sturdy and a solid feel. The front houses four green LEDs and 1 red LED. The green LEDs are to let you know which HDMI port is in use and the red LED is to let you know that the power is on. To the right of the button is a SELECT button that lets you toggle between the HDMI ports. On the back, there are four HDMI inputs. To the left is one HDMI output and DC port to plug power adapter.

Setup is plug-and-play. Simply plug in the cables, select the port and you're good to go! If your device does not have HDMI but uses DVI, you can also use DVI devices so as long you use the appropriate adapter.

Testing with a Sony PlayStation 3, XBox 360 Elite and HD-DVD Player and a Dell PC that uses DVI, all devices switched without a problem. I did not notice any quality downgrade. Even upconverted DVDs worked without a problem. What I did notice was that there was no input for audio.

The included remote measures approximately 3.5 inches tall by 1.5 inches wide and 0.25 inches high. The face of the remote has a POWER ON/OFF on the top left with 1-4 in the middle to select your mode. There is also a forward and back button to control the input sources. The battery runs on a Lithium Battery CR2025 (watch battery).

Conclusion : Overall, the Talismoon HDMI Switcher with Remote worked without a hitch. The design is nice and sleek and built sturdy. I dont know if this is on all HDMI Switchers but the one I received said "HIDOZO" on top. Dont know what this means or what the purpose is but it looks tacky. The lack of audio ports can be a negative to those who want the best set up. Would of also been nice if it included a DVI to HDMI adapter. The expensive price tag may turn people away but if you're running out of HDMI ports or looking for a selector, I suggest taking a look at this.

DCEmu and Goozex offer still running...

Posted By: bandit

If you're new to DCEmu or still havent budged, DCEmu Reviews and Goozex is still having a promotion of receiving 1 TRADE immediately and additional 100 points upon completing first trade. This offer ends on December 31, 2007.

Goozex is the new innovative system developed and tested by video-gamers for video-gamers. Goozex provides a unique trading platform that allows peer-to-multi-peer trading of physical goods.

I have been able to unload my old PC games as well as console games that either no one would ever buy from me or stores would offer like $1 for. With those games traded away, I was able to get a game that I wanted for the Wii without having to pay additional money for the game except for shipping. The more people you refer that completes a trade, the more trade credits you'll have towards trading.

PlayStation Eye, A Little More Info…

Posted By: bandit

As many of you probably know, PlayStation Eye is coming, so I wanted to share a little bit about what that means for all you video-bloggers, gamers and would-be-actors and directors out there.

While most of you know that PlayStation Eye is being bundled with The Eye of Judgment game, I also wanted to let you know it’ll be out on store shelves as a stand-alone product, too. PlayStation Eye has a lot of cool features and capabilities.

One question I’ve seen asked a lot is: “What makes PlayStation Eye different from its predecessor, the EyeToy camera?” Lots. For a start, PlayStation Eye was engineered from the onset to perform well in low-light conditions. It also has a 2-setting zoom lens (normal and wide angle) with fixed focus. What does that mean? Well, a lot less fussing around than previous cameras. PlayStation Eye gets a sharp, clear picture at 640 x 480 resolution at 60 frames per second (at 320 x 240 it looks even better at 120 fps)! It picks up image and motion in varying light conditions and doesn’t need your help to focus.

It also has a built-in 4-microphone array that allows you to enjoy online AV chat and in-game voice chat, in what we’re calling a “natural environment,” meaning, not awkwardly leaning toward your camera or speaking abnormally loud just so the mic picks up your voice. IMHO, this microphone really does do away with the need for a headset.

The PlayStation Eye does an excellent job of filtering out background noise for a clearer voice connection, but it also has twice the frame rate than most standard cameras (this is part of what sets it apart from any other webcam or camera for this generation of consoles), allowing for faster and more natural tracking, responsiveness and smoothness. I think if you take all of this into consideration, PlayStation Eye is an ideal camera for AV Chat on your PS3.

All of this sounds like a bunch of technical and marketing speak, I know, but the difference is clear when you plug it in; AV Chats are smooth, crisp, and from my experiences, better than what I’ve seen on any PC. And of course, on the PS3, you can use AV Chat with anyone on your friends list, anywhere in the world.

AV Chat is just the start for the PlayStation Eye. Along with some very cool, free content and fun activities available to Eye users via the PSN, keep your “eye” out (sorry, I couldn’t resist) for some upcoming games that integrate the Eye in really innovative ways. While games like Eye of Judgment use the camera to play the game itself, other upcoming games like SingStar (PS3) take advantage of the PlayStation Eye’s video capabilities so you can do things like make your own personalized music videos to share with family and friends online. Soon you’ll see some of our favorite bits of PlayStation Eye fun on the PSN, designed to turn your TV into an eye-popping piece of interactive art that no one can ignore… more on those at launch!

Lastly, a great value-add you may not all know about is the EyeCreate Software. This will be available for FREE download on the PlayStation Store (yes! free! come get it!) and allows you to save, edit and share your PlayStation Eye videos, photos and audio clips - all through your PS3. We’ll have more on EyeCreate later this week, including some really fun examples of how cool EyeCreate movies can be from the depths of our QA grotto.

PlayStation Eye will be available as a stand-alone product starting October 23, for $39.99 at all major retailers. I’m sure there will be some questions, so I’ll try to monitor the comments here and provide info where I can.

PRESS RELEASE: Wii chills out with Nyko's popular Intercooler

Posted By: bandit

Nyko Announces Intercooler For Wii Has Shipped To Retailers

Los Angeles, CA – October 10, 2007 - Nyko Technologies®, a premier peripherals manufacturer, announced today that it has shipped the Intercooler for Wii to retailers nationwide, giving Wii gamers the ultimate solution for keeping their innovative console running under optimal conditions.

The Intercooler for Wii is the perfect accessory for Wii gamers looking to keep their consoles running in the best possible environment. The Intercooler dramatically increases the rate of hot air flowing out of the vents, resulting in a console that runs at considerably lower temperatures. The Intercooler for Wii clips easily onto the back of the Wii, meaning there is no complicated installation or modification necessary. This patented design also leaves all of the inputs on the back of the console free and easily accessible. For image conscience gamers, the Intercooler for Wii comes in a décor that matches the aesthetic of the Wii itself and can be used when the console is in a horizontal or vertical position.

“The release of the Intercooler for Wii marks Nyko’s third Intercooler product for this current generation of consoles,” said Chris Arbogast, marketing manager at Nyko Technologies. “Due to popular demand from consumers who were impressed with the original intercooler models for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 we created the Intercooler for Wii which we feel will be as equally praised for its ability to keep the Wii running at appropriate temperature levels.”

The Intercooler for Wii is now available at retailers nationwide for a suggested retail price of $14.99 and on Nyko’s online store at www.nyko.com/intercoolerwii.

Logitech Keyboard and Microphone

Posted By: bandit

Logitech has announced that they will be releasing a full "Classic" USB keyboard for the Nintendo Wii. The image above is of the PC version but the Wii version will look the same as it will follow the Classic controller look. A Europe release has been announced but no release date. Expect the peripheral to be release worldwide as well.

The keyboard will also be Wii message board and internet channel enabled.

This is probably the same microphone that came with Boogie on the Nintendo Wii. But Logitech will be selling the Vantage USB Microphone separately for $29.99.

Mystery of Wii Play 'n Learn" answered...

Posted By: bandit

What is the Wii Play 'n Learn? Well it has a new SKU thats for sure. But people speculated that it was a new Wii or a Wii with new packaging such as including a new game of some sort. Well, its been answered.

The UPC code in question is, indeed, for a new Wii hardware package that will be on shelves this fall. The only difference between this and the current Wii configuration is (wait for it) the inclusion of the Wii Remote Jacket.

So how did the code get tagged in the database, then, with the name Wii Play 'n Learn, leading any reasonable observer to the conclusion that an educational something-or-another would also be packed in? No idea.

Wiimote Jacket hands-on

Posted By: bandit

Just in time for the winter, Nintendo has offered a free Wiimote Jacket to keep its controllers cozy. And by "cozy," we mean, "potential-lawsuit free." All of the demo controllers at Nintendo's "Fall Media Summit" had been fitted with the silicon sock. In my use, the extra layer added bulk, but the result felt about the same as -- and occasionally better than -- an unprotected controller.

The sleeve attaches tightly to the sides of the Wii Remote, only adding a few millimeters around the waist. More thickness at the bottom -- perhaps for pounding in that annoying straighten-the-papers WarioWare game -- adds about another centimeter of girth.

But the bulb-shaped top is significantly bigger than the naked Wiimote. Its spongy feel should absorb a lot of energy; I could imagine unintentionally hitting a table or younger sibling without causing injury. I was concerned that the bigger shape would ruin horizontal, NES-style games, but I ended up liking it a little more than the plain Wiimote. My left hand has always felt cramped next to the D-pad, and the Jacket gives it more to hold.

The Jacket also includes a port cover for use without the Nunchuk. I was mildly annoyed by moving the flap to plug in attachments, but gamers could cut that part off of their own Jackets. (See the gallery for a closer view.)

We've shrugged at Nintendo's 18-million dollar move seemingly to preempt American lawsuits. But even minimalist-preferring adult gamers may like the cover's extra size.

XCM releases new video for 1080i HDMI cable for 1st gen Xbox360

Posted By: bandit

XCM has released new videos and images for their 1080i HDMI cable for the 1st generation Xbox 360's. The video shows how to setup the 1080i HDMI cable.

1080i HDMI

1080i HDMI via DVI

Divineo China now has this available as well as Play-Asia. But I am actually disappointed by the design of the 1080i HDMI cable. The device is HUGE compared to previous HDMI products. Not to mention, all new Xbox360's will all have HDMI ports, so this is only useful for those who still have the 1st generation Xbox360's..if it hasnt given the RROD (Red Ring of Death) or gotten replaced.

For those who added us to their friends list and accepted our invites, you were eligible for our own contest. Sorry for the ghetto-ness but I wanted to give video proof. Some sites go by mathematical equations or some lottery drawing, I prefer drawing out of the hat method...or box in our case . So what are the prizes the winners get to choose from?
First Prize: (your choice)
  • Supercard DS ONE
  • PSPonTV
Second Prize: (your choice)
  • Griffin RoadDock PSP
  • Nyko GameFace 360
Winning contestants will be contacted through their Facebook account. If prize is not claimed within 3 business days, a new prize winner will be chosen.

Thanks to all those who participated. Hopefully we'll have more contests to offer.

Table Tennis attachment released

Posted By: bandit

With the release of Rockstar's Table Tennis for the Wii, there is bound to be a release of an accessory attachment from those quirky 3rd party manufacturers. At least I can somewhat see this useful similar to that of the Sports pack (tennis racket, golf club and baseball bat) but those others such as the Cooking Mama utensils, Zelda sword and shield?

The Table Tennis attachment or so they call it "Ping-Pong Bat", it sells for $13.

XCM releases e-setter concept art

Posted By: bandit

The e-setter is a device for people who can easy set up the screen on their TV, some people may have 2 or more TV at home, when they want to move the PS3 to play on another TV, they may find there has no picture on another TV, it is because the output resolution is different on each TV so they can’t get the picture, they have to set the PS3 back to original setting on their current TV before move to another TV, apart from that setting the output of PS3 is so complicated, almost take half hour to do so, the e-setter is a device for you to set up the output resolution easily, people just need to switch a buttons and get the easy set up in few seconds.

Here are two additional larger images of the concept art: here and here.

Review: Nyko Blu-Wave Infrared Remote

Posted By: bandit

Nyko Blu-Wave Infrared Remote
Manufacturer: Nyko
Site: Buy from Divineo US / Buy from Divineo France / Buy from Divineo Spain
Price: $22.99-29.95

Overview : Easily control the next generation of home entertainment with the Blue-Wave Remote from Nyko. The Blu Wave allows you to easily control the playback of Blu-Ray movies, DVDs and CDs on the PlayStation 3 console. Utilizing infrared technology, the Blue Wave can navigate system and movie menus, skip chapters or tracks, pause and play a movie or music and replicate other PlayStation 3 controller functionality from up to 25 feet away. The compact USB IR receiver plugs into any open USB port for easy set up requiring no complicate software, pairing or programming. The Blue Wave is powered by 2 AA batteries (included).

Features :
  • Control playback of Blu-Ray movies, DVDs and CDs
  • IR technology allows for control up to 25 feet away
  • Easily navigate movie and system menus
  • Compact USB dongle, no set up or pairing needed
  • Powered by 2 AAA batteries (included)
Quality/Usability : The PlayStation 3 has a built-in Blu-Ray DVD player but in order to use the menus and to control the PS3, you'll either have to use the SIXAXIS controller or Sony's Blu-Ray DVD Remote, both of which work with the PlayStation 3 via bluetooth. Like always, there will always be cheaper alternatives from 3rd party manufacturers such as the Nyko BluWave Infrared Remote, which retails for just $20.

The Blu-Wave includes a USB dongle, which acts as a infrared receiver and the Blu-Wave infrared remote. To match the PS3's look and to be consistent, the Blu-Wave is black with silver outlining. Included are two AAA batteries which are included. The remote itself feels very good in the hands. The remote is exactly like the PlayStation 3 SIXAXIS controller but without the motion and with a remote design. Along with the standard PS3 controllers such as square, triangle, X and circle, Nyko added some shortcuts for easier access such as fast-fowards, rewind, play, pause, display, chapter advance and many more simlar to that of what you would find on a DVD remote.

Setup is fairly easy. Simply just plug in the dongle into any of the consoles USB ports. The moment you plug it in, it should work immediately. Just like you would with a PC plug-n-play. The Blu-Wave remote worked perfectly both with DVD and Blu-Ray movies. All features worked perfectly but I did notice that while existing to the PS3's menu, there was a slight delay or lag. This doesnt happen with the SIXAXIS controller.

I was informed that since Nyko uses a proprietary code, that if you have a universal remote, you can set that remote to work with the PS3 and the infrared dongle. This will eliminate having an extra remote laying around. It would have been nice if the remote allowed you to turn ON and OFF the PlayStation 3 but you cant.

Conclusion : Overall, the Nyko Blu-Wave Infrared Remote works great and as it should. It would of been nice if the remote was able to turn ON and OFF the PlayStation 3 and be able to eject discs. The ability to use a universal remote with the dongle to eliminate having an extra remote laying around is great.

Features :

  • Output: 1 * HDMI, 1 * DVI
  • DVI-HDMI converter included
  • Easy to set up
  • Compatible with HD Televisions
  • Compatible with VGA/PC screens
  • Audio socket to connect to amplifier/extra speakers
  • 1080p resolution
Quality/Usability : The XCM HDMI/DVI Crossover Selector is designed to allow you to toggle between four (4) HDMI and one (1) DVI. If you havent noticed, as more and more devices such as HDTV's, HD cable, satellite boxes, DVD players (Blu-Ray and HD-DVD), they are now incorporating HDMI and DVI. As more people get into high def, they will have more and more devices but are only limited to a certain amount of inputs on their devices.

The selector is made of durable plastic. The top of the Crossover Selector has five switches (4-HDMI, 1-DVI). On the right and left side is a HDMI IN and Left and Right Audio IN. The front has two HDMI IN and L & R Audio IN as well as a DVI IN and L & R Audio IN. The back has a DC IN to plug the AC adapter into and a HDMI OUT and L & R Audio OUT. This is connected to your TV/monitor.

Setup is plug-and-play. Simply plug in the cables, select the port and you're good to go! If you have more than one device that uses DVI, you can also use those DVI devices so as long you use the appropriate adapter. If your monitor uses DVI, the Crossover Selector comes with a DVI to HDMI adapter so you can connect it to the device. When a device is in use, an LED is lit up to let you know which one is in use.

Testing with a Sony PlayStation 3, XBox 360 Elite and HD-DVD Player and a Dell PC that uses DVI, all devices switched without a problem. I did not notice any quality downgrade. Even upconverted DVDs worked without a problem. What makes the Crossover Selector stand out from some of the HDMI selectors is that you are able to connect audio cables to the selector.

Connecting to TV

Connecting to monitor

Conclusion : Overall, the XCM HDMI/DVI Crossover Selector worked flawlessly. The ability to connect audio cables to the selector and to a home theater system is a big plus in our books. It would have been nice if it included a remote that lets you switch between the devices instead of having to manually switch to the device you want to use. Those who live in the US or outside of Europe will need to power adapter converter that will fit their outlet. The included power plug has three prongs.

The review sample came with no instructions but it is very simple to most people

Firstly make sure you put the batteries the right way around in the plastic battery casing, failure to do so could cause problems and well its not going to work.

The USB Cable can be connected to your Nintendo Wii or any USB Compatible Device, if you have a PC or Laptop i suggest using them over using your Nintendo Wii, put simply the less stress on the Nintendo Wii causes less problems with over heating. Once the USB Cable is connected to both Base Charging Unit and USB Host you can then put your Wiimotes onto the Base Unit.

Once you have connected the Wiimotes (with the plastic casing/rechargeable batteries) correctly, the light will light up to let you know its charging. Once the Wiimotes are charged the red light will go out. Now your ready for Wii Gaming

As the Wii is more a casual console its very hard to test how long the batteries are before they run out but being rechargeable you should easily get a day out of them before charging.

Conclusion : Overall, with the Wiimote being a bit on the hungry side with batteries its a great idea to use rechargeables and the ability to recharge without taking the batteries out every time is very handy The AAA batteries arent as powerful as 2 2500MAH AA Batteries but the ability to recharge without taking it all apart is a major plus. The only problem with this method is that you'll need to sync the Wiimote before using the Double Wiimote Power Pack. The charging of the Wiimotes took me longer than 2 hours but that may be down to my laptop I used to charge.

Do I recommend this product? Yes, very much so if your still using normal batteries then get one now.

D2CKey now available..

Posted By: bandit

The moment some if not most new Wii owners have been waiting for. D2CKey has started to ship to resellers/distributors.

D2CKey is the first Wii modchip that will work on D2C chipsets on the Wii. Previously, there was no way to run previous modchips on this D2C chipset. With D2CKey, you are now able to. Its a lot harder to install as it requires 31 wires instead of the 5-6 wires on previous modchips.

The average going price for the D2CKey alone is $49.95USD. Installation of the D2CKey can range between $120.00-$150.00US. For more information, you can read our news post here.

Review: Team Symbiote Wii-BOSS Modchip

Posted By: bandit

Team Symbiote Wii-BOSS Modchip
Manufacturer: Team Symbiote
Site: N/A
Price: $40.00-$45.00

Overview : Almost all other conventional and homebrew modchips consist of two parts where the code is held, of which only the smaller EEPROM section of the chip can be changed easily. This EEPROM part of the code is very useful for small pre defined simple on or off selectable 1’s and 0’s and possibly a very small “additional feature” section. For example: Speed setting your chip or enabling multi-zone. However, if you want to update the entire chip, you need to physically remove the chip from the Wii, put it on a programmer, reprogram it, and then reinstall the chip into the Wii. This is not something you want to be doing constantly keep up with new optimized modchip codes for the Nintendo Wii.

Features :
  • The Wii-Boss is designed as a ‘quick solder’ chip with an external ribbon cable that can be left inside the machine, taped down on the back of the Wii, or even hidden inside the memory card bay. This chip can be fully programmed inside the machine with any code that supports the 12F629 PIC Microchip.
  • The Wii-Boss is also designed to allow external booting off the ribbon cable, therefore protecting the user against ever having to pull the Wii apart ever again if their requirements for a particular style of modchip change. External adapters to make competitor modchips and PC applications like DVD-Tool boot externally have already been designed and will be produced soon after the initial release of the premier product for a very minimal charge. These will likely be included in future kits at no extra charge.
  • The Wii-boss even comes packaged with its own RS-232 port external programmer. Software for the programmer is open source and therefore also provided free. The programmer is based on an open source project and therefore could be ‘modded’, theoretically, to be used as a standard RS-232 PIC programmer.
  • Contains provision for 2 LED's. LED's are a great look, but also good to use to check to see if your chip is installed correctly without needing to check it with a import or backup game.
Quality/Usability : This review is based on a North American (NTSC-US) Wii. All games tested during this review, we own the original games. This modchip is only compatible with Wii's that have a DMS, D2A or D2B chipset. This will NOT work on a D2C chipset.

Installation : You can find installation manual at Wii-BOSS' installation page. The installation page contains images on how to install the Wii-BOSS as well as to Nintendo Wii's with the 3-legs cut off the chip.

Like all other modchips that requiring soldering, you must dismantle the Wii. The Wii-BOSS also allows you to either install via quick solder or wire method (the latter method is preferred as you can remove the chip easily). Once you have dismantled the Wii, you must locate the points outlined in their installation guide. These points is where you will connect the soldering between the Wii and the Wii-BOSS. When soldering, you must remember to stay within the points and not to use too much solder or you may risk shorting out the chip as well as the Wii.

Once soldered, connect the ribbon cable to the Wii-BOSS. Once connected, you must fold the cable a certain way so that it fits in between the Wii components. Folding the cable may take some trial and error in order to fit correctly in place. If folded correctly, the ribbon cable will now be exiting through the USB port of the Wii once it has been put back together. When the Wii is put back together, connect the Wii-BOSS programmer to the ribbon cable and installation is complete.

The Wii-BOSS is similar to that of the WiiFree Easy Connect in terms of look and installation. But the Wii-BOSS allows you to use any open source modchip of your choice. At the time of this review, Wii-BOSS supports the following codes (in no particular order):
  • Wii-Free – last stable release ver2.45
  • YAOSM – last stable release ver1.8
  • Wiinja – last stable release ver2.0 (deluxe currently not available)
  • Open-Wii – last stable release ver1.3
  • Wii-skas – last stable release unknown
  • MaxBoot – last stable release ver1.0 (redirection code for external booting)
We were able to try Open-Wii, Wii-Free and YAOSM. All worked flawlessly and without a problem.

Compatibility issues is dependent on the open source modchip itself. We did not have any problem booting Wii games with any of the above mentioned open sources.

Conclusion : Overall, the Wii-BOSS handled itself pretty well. The included tri-wing screwdriver was durable. The packaging of the Wii-BOSS was very professional unlike some other modchips where they came in either ESD bags or in small bubblewraps. It would have been nice if it included a blank 12F629 PIC chip. Those thinking of purchasing the Wii-BOSS, I suggest picking up one or two 12F629 PIC chips first or you'll be left holding a Wii-BOSS. Reason I mentioned to get one or two is because if you are using Wii-Free and want to swap to another open source, you'll have to erase the Wii-Free in order to load a new open source. With extra PIC chips, all you have to do is swap them. Just make sure to label them or mark them so you know which chip contains what open source.

XCM XFPS 3.0 Sniper promises perfection

Posted By: bandit

XCM has released new pictures and videos of their THIRD XFPS...3.0 Sniper edition. Their latest version allows keyboard and mouse to be used on the Xbox 360, similar to that of their first (XFPS) and second (XFPS Pro) versions which is ideal for first person shooters with the ability to let you use your PlayStation controllers as well. XCM promises greater sensitivity, precision and smoothness. It looks exactly like the XFPS Pro but in a lime green color. No information has been released as to price and release. But my guess on price would be around $80-100.

Divineo China has it available for $92.45.

Review: MMR PSP UMD Replacement Case

Posted By: bandit

MMR PSP UMD Replacement Case
Manufacturer: Multimedia Recovery
Site: Buy from Multimedia Recovery
Price: $3.99 each / $11.99 (3-pack)

Overview : Finally a solution to your broken UMD games & movies. This nearly indestructible UMD repair shell is a replacement case carriage for those flimsy UMD shells that the game is originally contained in. Stop throwing out your games & start playing & watching all your PSP UMDs again!

Features :
  • Works as a replacement for ALL UMD Media - Game or Movie
  • Comes in clear colors
  • Reusable casing to change discs
Quality/Usability : I know everyone had at least one horribly scratched up UMD disc or a UMD disc that has cracked. With the item being damaged, it either wont play or you had to go out and buy a new game/movie. Now, there is a solution that Sony failed to provide whether it be replacement cases or better quality product.

Multimedia Recovery has filled that void by releasing a PSP UMD Replacement Case. The size is replacement case is exactly the same size of that of the original UMD case. There are some slight differences. The replacement case consists of two plastic pieces (front and back) while the original consists of multiple pieces. The replacement case snaps on and uses a screw to hold the cases together tightly and the replacement case comes in multiple colors.

To install, simply remove the disc from the original case. Place the disc on to the bottom replacement case and then place the top replacement case on top to encase the disc. All you have to do now is press all around the replacement case to ensure that it is in place and complete the process by screwing in the small screws. You can use a screwdriver similar to the ones used for glasses to tighten the screws.

Multimedia Recovery offers two types of cases; screw and snap-on. We only received the screw version so we are unable to give a review on the snap-on version. Some colors they currently offer are clear blue and crystal clear New colors will be available soon such as purple, red, yellow, multi-color, metal flake, pink and black.

Conclusion : Overall, the Multimedia Recovery PSP UMD Replacement Case is probably the only replacement UMD case on the market right now. The replacement case is durable and will not fall or break apart unlike the original case. The price is very cheap at $3.99 including free shipping within US, $4.99 including free shipping Internationally and $11.99 for a 3-pack. Its definitely better than spending $30 on a new game or movie. You can also swap disc with the replacement case but be sure to handle and place the UMD disc carefully as they are not well coated to begin with.

Here is a video by David from Multimedia Recovery:

*UPDATE*
SNAP-ON REVIEW VERSION

Quality/Usability : Multimedia Recovery was nice enough to send us the snap-on version of the PSP UMD Replacement Case. The snap-on version is identical to the screw version. Only difference, its snap-on and does not require a screw.

Game discs are held securely in place. The replacement case has 7 pegs all around the case that holds the top and bottom casing together. Only problem with these pegs is that they bend easily as they are plastic, small and thin. So if you're closing up the case and just so happen to close it wrong, you may end up bending the pegs. This can be easily fixed but using thin pliers or something to shift it back in place. By doing this, it will weaken the plastic. Even if you were to break it off or if it breaks off on its own, the replacement case is still held in place tightly.

Conclusion : Overall, the snap-on PSP UMD Replacement Case works just like the screw version. Just remember to be careful when closing up the replacement case so you dont bend one of the pegs out of place.

Review: VDigi VD-W2 Wii VGA Cable

Posted By: bandit

VDigi VD-W2 Wii VGA Cable
Manufacturer: VDigi
Site: Buy from VDigi
Price: $39.90

Overview : Connect your Wii units to a CRT or LCD monitor in the form of a VGA cable. The cable is compatible with Wii units in all regions and is capable of producing high quality VGA output.

Features :
  • Easy to setup and use
  • Compatible with Japan, U.S. and UK version console Wii, backward compatible with Gamecube 480p supported games
  • Provide high quality VGA output
  • Clear crystal image quality
  • No external power needed
  • Support wide range of CRT/LCD monitors
Quality/Usability : Not everyone owns a HDTV (yet) or have a spare TV to use while the family is using the TV to watch their favorite show. But everyone does have a computer monitor whether it be a CRT or LCD or probably spares. If not, prices are fairly cheap for those looking to use CRT/LCD monitors for gaming. The quality of the cable is very durable with the cable being 6.5ft (2M), with maximum output resolution 640x480 @ 60fps with output signals of RGBHV and RGBs. The cable has the AV out plug that plugs into the Wii, VGA plug that connects to monitor and RCA plugs (red and white for audio right and left and green component cable).

To set your WIi to 480p, there are two ways. If you have component cable hooked up to your Wii already, then you're set. If not, you'll need to connect the AV out plug to the back of the Wii. Once connected, insert your green component into the the TV. Although this is for component, you can plug into the video plug on standard TVs. Turn on the Wii and a blue power indicator will light up on the VD-W2 but the display will be in black and white. From here, change the settings on the Wii (Wii icon > Wii settings > Screen > TV Resolution > select EDTV or HDTV > Confirm). If you're using a standard TV, your screen will go blank as it can not support HDTV signal.

You can either leave the console on or off but you can turn it off to be safe. Disconnect the cables that is connected to the TV and plug the VGA connector to your monitor. Once connected and Wii turned back on, the Wii dashboard will be displayed. For audio, connect the RCA plugs (audio L/R) to your audio equipment. If you dont, you can connect the the included 3.5mm headphone jack converter and connect to any PC speakers for audio.

On the back of the VGA connector are small dip switches. I didnt have to touch it, but I assume if you are having problems with your display you would toggle with the switches.

MODE/DIP / RGBS (Comp) / RGBHV (Default) / RGBHV (1) / RGBHV (2)
1______________ON__________OFF__________OFF______O FF
2______________OFF__________ON__________ON_______O N
3______________OFF__________OFF_________ON_______O FF
4______________OFF__________OFF_________OFF______O N

All the games I tried whether it be Wii or GameCube games, worked perfectly and looked great with bright vivid colors. I did notice that Zelda: Twilight Princess did show scanlines but I assume it was the game as some other Nintendo developed games such as Mario Party 8 did the same thing but some other games developed by other companies didnt.

Conclusion : Overall, the VDigi VD-W2 Wii VGA Cable worked as it should. The colors were bright and vivid and pictures being clear and crisp. The ability to change the settings on the Wii without the use of a HDTV comes in very handy. The manual was photocopied and black and white but so as long it showed us how to connect and set things up, who cares? The scanlines seems to be normal as it is game related to only Nintendo developed games.

The race to get Super Mario Galaxy working

Posted By: bandit

With Super Mario Galaxy being sent to retail stores to be demoed, some souls have taken the game home and leaked the full version of the game before its officially released. Supposedly, Super Mario Galaxy has a new copy protection that prevents the game from working on modchipped Wii's.

D2CKey is the first modchip to be able to play Super Mario Galaxy. Other modchip makers such as Team Cyclops (CycloWiz) and Team WiiKey are looking into a fix. Actually, Team Cyclops has already released a 3.6BETA that works with Super Mario Galaxy. Team WiiKey has found a fix but will need to recode as there were changes made. No word from other makers and open source's such as WiiFree, YAOSM.

We here at DCEmu do not condone piracy. If you want to play the game or any game for that matter, go out and support the developers, publishers and the industry by purchasing the actual game from your retailer.

*UPDATE*
The Wiikey Team has released a beta version of their firmware which addresses the Error 001 issue in the Super Mario Galaxy Nintendo Wii game. They are now the third company to release a fix for their line of Nintendo Wii modchips.
We are pleased to announce that BETA HOTFIX v1.9g of the Wiikey firmware is now available to download. Please note that this is a BETA HOTFIX released as an immediate response to feedback from users regarding SMG. It comes with absolutely no warranty or guarantees. Use it at your own risk! Feedback is welcome, but please send your message one time only. We can't reply to every message we get, but we do read all of them.
