PS3 Blu-Ray Disc Remote (Official)
Manufacturer: Sony
Site: Buy from Goldenshop
Price: $26.00-$35.00
Overview : The PLAYSTATION®3 Blu-ray remote control enables users streamlined access to the PLAYSTATION®3 system's disc features. Unlike standard infrared remotes, the Blu-ray remote control uses Bluetooth technology so it can be used without having to point directly at the PLAYSTATION®3 system.
Features- Official Remote Control
- Bluetooth Remote Control
- Enables DVD and Blu-Ray Disc (BD) playback
Quality/Usability : Putting the console aspect on the side and the PlayStation 3 is the best Blu-Ray player on the market. If you're reading this review, then you probably already have the PlayStation 3. You're also probably using the SIXAXIS or Dual Shock 3 to navigate the Blu-Ray disc menus. Since the PlayStation 3 has no built-in IR, its all bluetooth that will be doing all the communicating. So if you have a universal remote, it wont work. But there is a solution that I'll talk about later.
The PS3 Blu-Ray remote looks like a typical DVD remote, runs on two (2) AA batteries and allows you to navigate menus and controls. The remote measures approximately 8.5” long, 2” wide and 1” thick. It weighs in at 3.7 ounces (103 grams) or 5.0 ounces (135 grams) with batteries inserted. The remote sports 51 different commands. There is no dedicated ON/OFF button like normal remotes but to turn ON/OFF your PlayStation 3, there is a PS button just like on the SIXAXIS/DS3 controller. Press once to turn on the PS3. Press and hold the PS button for a couple of seconds and select "Turn off the system". You can also turn on the PS3 just by pressing any of the buttons on the remote.
Every button that you would find on a standard DVD remote such as Play, Stop, Next, Prev, Scan, Audio, Subtitle, directional pad, Enter, are all here. Everything you'll find on a PS3 controller is here as well such as Select, Start, L1-L3, R1-R3, X, O, Triangle, Square, etc. The remote also has an Eject button.
Since the remote is bluetooth, you'll have to pair it to the PlayStation 3. Unlike traditional IR remotes, you do not have to directly aim the remote at the PlayStation 3. The response of the remote is very quick and has a 30 foot range.
The remote feels comfortable in the hands although fairly long. What would of been nice was adding backlight to the remote buttons.
Conclusion : Overall, the PS3 Blu-Ray Disc Remote works great. Since its blutooth, you can only use this with the PlayStation 3. There is no IR so you wont be able to use this with any other home theater equipment such as your receiver or TV. At the time of this review, I dont know what the Red, Green, Blue and Yellow buttons are for on the remote but I assume it will be for the interactive stuff when it becomes available. One thing that can be annoying is the fact that any press of a button, even if accidental, the PS3 will turn on.
As mentioned in the beginning of the review, I mentioned a solution for those with universal remotes. You can check out our review on the PS3IRX1 IR Receiver Remote Adapter. Although you can use your universal remote and control the player on the PS3, there will be some lack of supported functions as that is the main drawback with any IR receivers.
So if you have a big Blu-Ray library, this will definitely come in handy as the IR method does not support all commands. If you dont, stick to some IR methods for your minor usage but will cover the most important commands needed. Hopefully, a company will come up with a IR to bluetooth option for those with universal remotes.

PS3IR-X1 IR Receiver Remote Adapter
Manufacturer: Schmartz
Site: Buy from Schmartz
Price: $35.00
Overview : This is the original snazzy looking version that plugs into a PS3 USB port. The look is sleek. It follows the contours of the front of the PS3 and has the same shiny black surface. When installed, it looks just like it is part of the PS3!
This device accepts PS2 compatible IR commands and converts them to PS3 game controller key presses via USB.
Plug it in and... It just works!
For best results, program your universal remote control for Sony PS2 mode.
Do not mistake this device with other competing products. This one actually works. This device is specially tuned for trouble free operation. It will work flawlessly right away, even when navigating using the arrow keys.
Note: This model will not Power ON the PS3 since the PS3 firmware doesn't enable this function for USB devices. It supports the same functionality as a game controller with the exception of the PS key.
Features- Supports basic set of 31 commands
- Compatible with all universal remotes
- Uses PS2 infra-red codes
- Attractive form-factor
Quality/Usability : Having purchased a Logitech Harmony Advanced Remote to eliminate the amount of remotes laying around, the PlayStation 3 failed to help the cause. The PS3 does not use infrared (IR) but instead, uses bluetooth. If you are using a IR universal remote, there are different methods of using it.
Sony released their own DVD remote for the PlayStation 2 (model SCHP-10150). When the PS2 first launched, the DVD remote included a IR receiver. As newer PS2's were released, the IR was built in and the dongle was no longer being packaged in. For those that is able to find one or still have the original PS2 DVD remote, you can use IR receiver and a PS2 to PS3 controller adapter, since the PS3 doesnt have PS2 controller port.
Another option is to buy a 3rd party DVD remote that uses IR such as Nyko's Blu-Wave Infrared Remote but you spent all that money for a IR receiver and a remote you wont be using?
Schmartz is here to solve your problems. The PS3IRX1 is a IR receiver that connects to the USB port of your PS3 and allows you to use your universal remote. As mentioned above, I tested this nifty device with my Logitech Harmony Advanced Remote. To set up the PS3IRX1, simply plug it into any of the USB ports on the front of the PlayStation 3.
Now, to setup the Logitech Harmony Remote, I simply connected the remote to my computer. Set up an "Activity" and "Device" and chose "Sony PlayStation 2". The reason I didnt choose Sony PlayStation 3 is since the universal remote does not use Bluetooth, choosing the PS3 wouldnt work and even Logitech says that the remote would not work. Choosing the PS2 also gives that message but ignore this message as their database is a bit outdated. If you are using a more complex and advanced controller, you are able to enter HEX codes to your controller.
Choosing the PS3 instead of the PS2 only caused problems since none of the buttons really worked for me. Choosing the PS2, all the buttons were mapped. FF, RR, Chapter Skips, Play, Pause, Menu, etc. all worked without problems. Unfortunately, there is no eject and most importantly, ON/OFF. The ON/OFF is however, available on the PS3IR+PWR IR (review).
Conclusion : Overall, the PS3IRX1 IR Remote Adapter works great. Installation is easy...then again, its plug and play. Setting up your universal remote is very easy and will work. Have problems or questions? the support that AVSForums as well as from Mike Muecke (owner/designer), provide excellent customer support. People are willing to help, give tips and Mike is there every step of the way until you get your problems fixed.
However, $35.00 is a bit pricey considering Mike is a one-man show designing, building, testing, packing and shipping the PS3IRX1 all by himself. Not to mention customer service all from the US of A! Now that Mike has a manufacturer mass producing it to keep up with the demand, hopefully this will lower the price.
What I love about Mike is that he's honest and is upfront...
"My products will never be the cheapest on the market. I charge more so that I can afford to spend time in the lab making sure everything works amazingly well. These products are customized based on your needs and feedback. So, this is more of an electronics boutique than anything else. I generally offer services and products for smaller niche markets."
You can get the Nyko Blu-Wave IR Remote for approximately $15.00, but you'll end up with a extra remote that you wont use and the IR dongle will stick out like a thumbdrive. The product is very sturdy, blends in with the PS3 very well, but is a dust and fingerprint magnet like the PS3. For an extra $20, I dont need the fancy packaging. So as long product works and if I need help, I know that a person with knowledge of the product can help me.

A modder has made a Wii Nunchuk mod. It was designed for a good friend of the modder, who's arm only extends a little below the elbow. The design for the Nunchuk is intended to be used at the elbow with the joystick resting on a knee. The two buttons from the Nunchuk were removed and placed on the side of the Wii-remote where they can be easily pressed with the middle and index fingers.
To view this mod project, click on link below and go to "Projects". On the right hand side, you'll see "Special Projects" and click on the "Wii controller" link.

February 19th, 2008, 15:07 Posted By: bandit
TOKYO--Toshiba Corporation today announced that it has undertaken a thorough review of its overall strategy for HD DVD and has decided it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders. This decision has been made following recent major changes in the market. Toshiba will continue, however, to provide full product support and after-sales service for all owners of Toshiba HD DVD products.
HD DVD was developed to offer consumers access at an affordable price to high-quality, high definition content and prepare them for the digital convergence of tomorrow where the fusion of consumer electronics and IT will continue to progress.
"We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called 'next-generation format war' and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop," said Atsutoshi Nishida, President and CEO of Toshiba Corporation. "While we are disappointed for the company and more importantly, for the consumer, the real mass market opportunity for high definition content remains untapped and Toshiba is both able and determined to use our talent, technology and intellectual property to make digital convergence a reality."
Toshiba will continue to lead innovation, in a wide range of technologies that will drive mass market access to high definition content. These include high capacity NAND flash memory, small form factor hard disk drives, next generation CPUs, visual processing, and wireless and encryption technologies. The company expects to make forthcoming announcements around strategic progress in these convergence technologies.
Toshiba will begin to reduce shipments of HD DVD players and recorders to retail channels, aiming for cessation of these businesses by the end of March 2008. Toshiba also plans to end volume production of HD DVD disk drives for such applications as PCs and games in the same timeframe, yet will continue to make efforts to meet customer requirements. The company will continue to assess the position of notebook PCs with integrated HD DVD drives within the overall PC business relative to future market demand.
This decision will not impact on Toshiba's commitment to standard DVD, and the company will continue to market conventional DVD players and recorders. Toshiba intends to continue to contribute to the development of the DVD industry, as a member of the DVD Forum, an international organization with some 200 member companies, committed to the discussion and defining of optimum optical disc formats for the consumer and the related industries.
Toshiba also intends to maintain collaborative relations with the companies who joined with Toshiba in working to build up the HD DVD market, including Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, and DreamWorks Animation and major Japanese and European content providers on the entertainment side, as well as leaders in the IT industry, including Microsoft, Intel, and HP. Toshiba will study possible collaboration with these companies for future business opportunities, utilizing the many assets generated through the development of HD DVD.
Here is something interesting during Q&A:
Q: How many HD DVD players and recorders, exactly, did you sell?
A: 600,000 players in the US -- 300,000 of which were Xbox 360 HD DVD drives. 100,000 units were sold in Europe. And about 10,000 players and 20,000 recorders in Japan. So about 730,000 units worldwide. You would think there would have been more HD DVD drives sold during the $100 fiasco price drop at Best Buy, Walmart, Circuit City, etc.
