Quality/Usability : I dont know about most people, but when it comes to video game and accessories, I dont have much room to store them. Especially when it comes to big accessories like guitars and drums. Its worse when you're a big gamer and a HUGE fan of games like Guitar Hero and Rockband and you have two guitars, one for each game and they dont work together. One guitar is specific to Guitar Hero and the other guitars is Rock Band only. Ok, so that isnt that bad. Two guitars. But what if you want multiplayer action!? Now you have to buy another Guitar Hero guitar.
Talismoon has helped the elimination of having multiple guitars. The Rock Thunder Guitar for Guitar Hero and Rock Band is one guitar, for both games. The guitar comes with instructions on how to sync the guitar with Rock Band as well as an instruction manual. Like other guitars, you'll need to insert a Wii controller into it. The Rock Thunder requires 2 AA batteries and there is a USB receiver (included) that needs to be connected to one of the USB ports on the back of the Wii. After 10 mins of no operation, it will go into sleep-mode. To wake up the guitar, press the button next to the joystick.
To use it with Guitar Hero, you simply insert the Wii Remote, slide the power toggle switch to GH and you're ready to go. If you are using the guitar for Rock Band, you will have to detach the Wii remote as it is not needed. Plug in the USB wireless receiver into the Wii. Turn on the Wii and the receiver will begin to flash. On the guitar, simply slide the switch to RB, press the connect button on the guitar and receiver at the same time. When the RX indicator stops flashing, the connection is complete.
There are blue LEDs around the strum bar. This lets you know when the guitar is ON. If you dont see the lit up, guitar is not ON. To change between Rock Band and Guitar Hero, there is a switch "RB" and "GH", respectively. The chrome switches and the thumbstick located near the wii remote only work when you are playing Guitar Hero, and when the wii remote is plugged in. You don't have the wii remote plugged in when you play rock band, so, they don't operate at that time. You must use a separate wii remote to operate the basic game functions. If the guitar is not sync with Rockband, hold down the green fret button on the guitar while a song is starting. If the green fret bar indicator on the screen stays solid, you have a good sync. If it blinks, then you have a bad sync. Unplug the dongle from the Wii and plug it back in again. re-sync the guitar. Try the fret button test described in the first two sentences again.
Syncing and getting the controller set up is not as bad as it seems. Might get annoying just removing the controller but thats no big deal at all. The wireless receiver offers a good range. What interests me is that there is a LAN adapter. Its like a phone plug. What does this do or what is it for? I have no idea. It was not mentioned as to what the purpose of this was for except that there was a LAN plug.
Conclusion : Overall, the Rock Thunder Guitar for Guitar Hero and Rock Band works pretty good. It cuts down on space of having multiple guitars for multiplayer experience. For the price of $64.99, you get 2 guitar controllers. But may cost more if you have to constantly replace the 2 AA batteries. The batteries lasted a good while but I always use rechargeables. I didnt have problems syncing but switching from GH to RB, you will have to resync each time.

SpeakerCom 360
Xbox 360 gamers can now customize how they communicate over Xbox Live® with SpeakerCom 360, which provides the choice to talk and listen over a loud speaker or through a traditional headset, giving players two communication options in one device. In Headset mode, the SpeakerCom provides a comfortable, stereo, in-ear solution. Wii DDR Dance Advance Mat
Manufacturer: Dragon
Site: Buy from GoldenShop.hk
Price: $14.00
Overview : Play your dance game with an arcade feeling with this dancing mat compatible with Nintendo Wii and Gamecube. Made of high quality material, slip proof and durable, it is perfect to enjoy dancing games to the most!
Features :
Amazing and funny
Non slip, high quality and comfortable dance mat surface
Ideal for physical exercise
Compatible with any version of Nintendo Wii and Gamecube dance games
Quality/Usability : Having purchase Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party, it only comes with one Official Konami dance pad. Its hard to find an extra Konami dance pad that is sold separately. Luckily, 3rd party manufacturers are always there to pick up the slack of official products. Dragon has released a dance pad that is compatible with both the Wii and GameCube. So now, I can get my friends to join in with me instead of taking turns.
The pad is made durable plastic similar to that of the official pads. Size is the same and the plug connects to the Gamecube port. The mat measures 925mm x 790mm. You have the usual UP, DOWN, LEFT and RIGHT arrows. On the top left corner is a "B" button and top right is a "A" button. The middle of the pad has a silhouette of Mario break dancing from the Mario version of DDR that was released on the GameCube.
The Wii recognizes the dance pad and during gameplay, it does pretty well. It was able to recognize my stomps or dance, if you want to call it that. There were times where it wouldnt recognize but that could be user error as we all miss the arrows in the heat of a dance off.
Conclusion : Overall, the Wii DDR Dance Advance Mat performed on par with the Official Konami dance pad. Personally, I'm the type that prefers official products. The price of an official dance pad of $40-$50 is a bit pricey compared to the $14 3rd party accessory that works just as good. I paid $60 for Official DDR pads a long time ago for my PS2 DDRs and ended up selling them for more than half of what I paid. So if you're the type to get rid of your games or trade them (via Goozex.com or Goozex.eu) and dont care if its official product so as long it works, I definitely suggest picking this up. It will save you some money.

KontrolFreek FPS Freek Joystick (Retail)
Manufacturer: KontrolFreek
Site: Buy from KontrolFreek
Price: $9.95 (pack of 2) / $17.50 (pack of 4)
Overview : FPS Freek increases your accuracy in first-person shooter games including Halo, Gears of War, Call of Duty and more.
FPS Freek was tested by professional gamers in Halo tournaments and by avid gamers across the country. The results are clear – FPS Freek enhances aiming precision and increases game performance with a minimal learning curve.
The added analog stick length provides 40% more linear distance from full stop to stop. This gives you more leverage and increased control without disturbing your natural gaming feel.
Patent Pending
Quality/Usability : This review is an update to the KontrolFreek FPS Freek Joystick. This review is based off of the final retail product.
The prototype that I received was just a piece of plastic. I had to provide my own rubberized top which was Gel Tabz. The final and retail product has a black rubberized top on it.
Too attach the FPS Freek add-on, simply place the FPS Freek over the analog stick and push down until its securely in place. This adds another 1/2 inch in height to the sticks which gives you better leverage to the joystick. Even with the added height, pressing on down on the sticks feels comfortable. As mentioned, with the FPS Freek add-on installed, this gives a better accuracy and control over movement of the joystick. Putting the FPS Freek through our gameplay testing (Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, Gears of War, Rainbox Six: Vegas 2 and Call of Duty 4), we saw that we were able to make minor aiming adjustments that would cause us to move right by our target on a normal controller. Instead of shooting past enemy heads or wasting bullets trying to shoot a running target, we were able to precisely aim our crosshair/sight onto our enemies even while they were running like a chicken with their heads cut off.
Having used the FPS Freek for over a year, I am still not the best at FPS games but I have improved my aiming.
Conclusion : Overall, the retail product of KontrolFreek FPS Freek Joystick is just as good as the prototype. Now that it includes the rubberized top, the height is now 1/4 smaller compared to when I used the Gel Tabz.

Quality/Usability : Remember that this review is an update to Acekard 2.1 DS MicroSDHC SLOT-1. I will not discuss all the features of Acekard but more on what is different and new between Acekard 2i and Acekard 2.1.
I was sent a review sample of Acekard 2i so I am unable to provide any information on the package. But it should look the same as all other previous Acekard 2's packaging. The only thing I can comment is that the cart itself looks like all other Acekard 2's with the only difference being the sticker..slightly. The sticker still has a shiny look to it with "acekard" on it with the letter "i" next to it and a big "2" behind it. Underneath, it says DSi Compatible. The cart no longer uses screws/tabs to hold it in place. Instead, it is glued together.
The cartridge size remains the same and feels sturdy. However, the PCB chip does not protrude out from the sticker anymore. The top feels smooth. The Acekard 2.1 has a spring loaded microSD slot and has clips on the side that holds the casing together.
The Acekard 2i was both tested in a the DS Lite as well as the new DSi. The GUI menu has not changed as it still looks the same like AK2 and Acekard R.P.G. The menu still displays a Slot-2 but we all know that Nintendo has eliminated the GBA slot from the DSi. The top screen displays time, date and calendar while the bottom screens displays game list, options and directories.
The usual menus and options are still there but there are some new additions...
1. Autorun under Patches/Patch Options - This allows you to load the last game you played. You can override this by holding "B" when booting the Acekard 2i.
2. Shortcut under Properties - This allows you to create a shortcut of the game in the GUI
3. Backup Save under Properties - You can create up to 6 backup saves in a game
Conclusion : Overall, the Acekard 2i AK2i DS DSi SLOT-1 works just like any Acekards. Whats great is that it works both on DS/DSLite and the new DSi. The GUI looks the same with a few added features. The cart and label looks the same so when you're ordering, make sure it says DSi compatible. The only problem is that we dont know the full potential. You can play current DS games but when new DSi specific games come out or even new updates to the firmware on the DSi, no one will know if this will work. So its only good for now but when new stuff is released, this can be obsolete.

Like the Xbox 360 Chatpad, Sony has released their own QWERTY keypad for the Sony PlayStation 3.
The keypad is small, lightweight and fits over the Dual Shock or SIXAXIS controller and is held in place with a spring-loaded clap. On the face of the keypad are your typical QWERTY keypads as well as ESC, TAB, CAPS, SPACEBAR, BACK, ENTER, etc. Also on the keypad is SELECT, START and PS button. But some additional buttons that make it easier for gamers is the ability to view messages and friends list with their own dedicated buttons. With these two dedicated buttons, it cuts down on time and hassle of having to navigate through menus after pressing the PS button. Another nice feature is the touch sensitive keypad allowing gamers to swipe across the keypad surface. But the keypads themselves are a bit small and will require some getting use to.
The keypad has its own battery and does not run off the Dual Shock or SIXAXIS power. So this requires a Mini-USB to charge the battery.
To use the touchpad, you simply press the button that looks like a pointing finger cursor and the enter keypad becomes a touchpad. The idea is to sweep your finger over the buttons to navigate the XMB or web browser. The concept is nice but fails at what it does due to lack of a smooth surface.
Conclusion : Overall, the PlayStation 3 Wireless QWERTY Keypad makes typing a lot easier. However, they keypads are a tad bit small and the touch sensitive keypad isn't as responsive as I would like it to be. Another feature I hoped that they had incorporated was taking power from the controller rather than having its own rechargeable battery. This means another item needs to be charged. Is it worth the $50? Depends on if you're a heavy texter. It would look more eye catching if the MSRP was the same as MS Chatpad ($30).
Hori Arcade Fighting Stick EX2
Manufacturer: Hori
Site: Buy from GoldenShop.hk
Price: $79.00
Overview : Now you have a complete fighting chance on your XBOX360. The Hori Arcade Fighting Stick for your XBOX360 is the premier fighting game fans' stick of choice. Stick features authentic Japanese style convex button layout & solid state mechanics.
Features :
Officially licensed for Xbox 360™
Same style as arcade design
Recommended for fighting and classic arcade games that are available on Xbox Live
Comfortable button layout: The lever and buttons are designed and placed on same layout as the arcade for maximum comfort.
Expansion port included: The port allows you to attach your headset to this unit!
Quality/Usability : Let me start off by saying that all the Xbox 360 Hori Arcade Fighting Stick EX2's are the same with the only difference being the artwork whether it be plain EX2, Soul Calibur, Dead or Alive or Virtua Fighter.
The Hori Arcade Fighting Stick EX2 does not feel heavy as it weighs a couple of pounds and is reasonably sized so that it will fit comfortably on your lap (measures 11" (W) x 8" (L) x 1˝" (H)). The casing of the EX2 is made of white plastic. On the left, you have your joystick. To the right, you have your standard buttons such as A, B, X, Y as well as LT and RT. The top contains the LB, SELECT, Xbox 360 Guide with indicators, START and RB. Towards the bottom is an expansion port to connect your communication headset. The USB cord on the stick is fairly long (approximately 5-6 feet long) that you don't have to sit so close and it features a quick disconnect cord in case someone trips over it, it wont knock your stick or your console over.
Connecting the EX2 is simply plug and play. Plug the USB cord to the front of the Xbox360 and press the Xbox Guide to activate and power the stick. The EX2 works with all games but with the layout of buttons, it may be hard to play with. With fighting games, you would be able to configure the buttons to your liking while majority of games, you can't. So this should be used with fighting games or XBLA games.
While playing Street Fighter IV with the EX2, the controls were responsive. I'm not that big on fighting games but I play it once in a while. I felt that the EX2 pulled off majority of the moves that I wanted to do. I also tend to be a button masher and the EX2 withstood my bashings. The joystick clicked at every location I moved it to. However, the buttons did not click like the arcades. It had a mushy feel to it unlike the arcade as it is missing microswitches. The 6 buttons also have a domed shape top to it. It would have been better if the buttons were concave. This would of made the experience better.
The parts used on the EX2 are stock and good but not as great as Sanwa or HAPP parts. These parts are used in arcades and in tournaments. If you're skilled and brave enough, you can mod the EX2 with these parts but I heard the EX2 is difficult to mod (link on how to mod below).
Conclusion : Overall, the Hori Arcade Fighting Stick EX2 is a sturdy arcade stick. If you're a hardcore gamer who's into fighting games, you might want to stay away from this. Either get a better high end fighting stick or get a custom one with better parts. For those who are novice or rarely play fighting games like myself, may want to look into this. However, for something you'll probably rarely use, $80 is a bit pricey. But if you can find this cheaper, it worth taking a look. Do know that this will not replace your regular controller.
If you're really brave or skilled with hacking accessories or electronics, you can mod and upgrade your EX2 with Sanwa or HAPP parts by following this guide, here is another or how about this one. There are probably more guides or tutorials by searching Google.
Overview : JUST A LITTLE TO THE LEFT AND...HAHA! OWNED!
How many times have your fingers slipped off the L2 and R2, and always at a crucial moment in the game? RealTriggers put a stop to that happening ever again!
Simply put... if you use a Sony™ PS3 Controller, and your serious about your gaming, you should be using these!
Quality/Usability : The Gioteck Real Triggers isnt really new. Its been available for sometime exclusively in Europe. The Real Triggers are made of two plastic pieces that clip over the L2 and R2 triggers on the PS3 controller. By doing so, this makes the triggers bigger and provides a ledge.
The Real Trigger has the same color, texture and feel as the actual trigger itself. This makes it feel like it was originally on the controller and not a cheap plastic 3rd party attachment. It doesnt feel out of place at all.
Having tested it with a couple of racing games and shooters, there was an improvement in my controls as well as the comfort when I hold the Dual Shock.
Conclusion : Overall, the Gioteck PS3 Sixaxis Real Triggers improves the L2 and R2 triggers on the PS3 controller. Whether you have a Sixaxis or Dual Shock controller, the Real Trigger will fit. This seems to be available only in Europe (at the moment) but it seems that Gioteck plans to release it globally. When? No idea but they should release it soon. The price is very very reasonable but hopefully the shipping doesnt cost as much as the triggers themselves.
There's not exactly a wealth of information about this one just yet, but peripheral maker mLani (started by the former founder of SplitFish) looks to be doing its best to make PC gamers feel a bit more at home on the PS3 with this new FPS-minded controller which, coincidentally, looks to compete directly with some of SplitFish's own offerings. Apparently, in addition to improving your aim in Killzone 2, this one can double as a mouse for your PC and, as you can see above, it's also wireless, although it's at least possible that the cable between the mouse and the Wiimote-esque controller has been conveniently omitted. No word on a price, but this one's supposedly on track for a release in the next three months or so.
Nintendo's Japanese site is now showing a new version of the dual-analog Classic Controller for Wii. The "Classic Controller Pro" replaces the original's tiny secondary shoulder buttons with a traditional Dual Shock style "two rows of buttons" set up, moves the two analog sticks out a bit from the center, and adds some hand grips. Hand grips are for pros.
Basically, if a Dual Shock and a Wii Classic Controller had a baby, it would be -- a disgusting thing to think about. But if someone were to design a video game controller that used elements of both of those controllers, it would be the Classic Controller Pro.
Nintendo plans a summer 2009 release for this controller, which should dovetail nicely with Monster Hunter 3 -- no doubt irritating Capcom, who is bundling a port of its predecessor, Monster Hunter G, with a special blue version of the original Classic. No pricing or information about a release outside of Japan is given.
Within a day or two of us posting our reviews (here and here) on the Cross Battle Adapter for the PlayStation 3, we got word that XCM has released Cross Battle Adapter Plus which now supports rumble feature.
Here is a video of it in action...
Now those who purchased the original Cross Battle Adapter is now stuck with an obsolete product. If they want the rumble feature, they must go out and purchase an entirely new product. This was the same for XCM's XFPS lineup.
Overview: Finally a way to enjoy your favorite PlayStation 3 games using your wired Xbox 360 controller! This unit allows you to connect any wired Xbox 360 controller to your PlayStation 3 with ease. Just plug and play! With built in Rapid Fire / Turbo modes for each button controlled independently.
Features:
Compatible with ALL PlayStation consoles and models.
Requires the wired Xbox 360 controller.
Built in Rapid Fire / Turbo for each button with independant controls.
Easy to Use - Just Plug and Play!
Quality/Usability: There are haters and fanboys, debates and arguments as to which controller is better. Some hate the Dual Shock controller while others hate Xbox 360's controller. But there are some who want to play that one exclusive title that is only available only for the PS3 or 360 but would not subject themselves to putting up with having to play with a controller they dont feel comfortable with. If I was like that, I wouldnt blame them but XCM has come up with a solution.
They have come up with an adapter called the Cross Battle Adapter, that lets you use Xbox 360's controller on the PlayStation 3. Yes, those who dont like the DS controller in their hands, can use their beloved 360 controller on the PlayStation 3 and play games. The Cross Battle Adapter is housed in a clear blue casing with toggle switches on the front. These switches are for the TURBO function. Each switch is also labeled to tell you what each buttons are. For instance, the [X] button on the PS3 is the [A] button the 360. The R1 button on the PS3 is the RB on the 360.
The CBA connects to the PS3 via USB cable and is simply a plug-n-play. Unfortunately, this adapter does not work with wireless Xbox 360 controllers. You'll need to connect it via wire/corded controller. The moment you plug the wired 360 controller and CBA, you can start navigating the XMB immediately. Thanks to Goozex (US/CAN / EU) and trading my games, I was able to review the following games without having to waste too much money..
Little Big Planet - LBP doesnt require much except for timing. A slip of the button and you have to start at the last check point. Buttons felt comfortable. Metal Gear Solid 4 - This was my first time playing MGS with a 360 controller. It took a couple of mins for me to get accustomed to the controls but once I got it down, it was very easy to play and controlled really well. Motorstorm - When it comes to racing, I actually prefer the 360 because although its a bit clunky, it contoured my hand. Controlling the vehicle, braking and accelerating all worked without a problem. I think I actually did better with the 360 controller than I did with the Dual Shock. Resistance 2 - I think this is the genre where most of the debate is revolved around...First Person Shooters. Some PC owners will even chime in and say get a mouse and keyboard..but that is a different product ([url=http://reviews.dcemu.co.uk/review-team-xtender-xcm-xfps-rateup-116932.html]XFPS RateUp[url]) and debate. Having played Tom Clancy's Rainbox 6 Las Vegas, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, Gears of Wars 2 all on the Xbox 360, I was so use to holding the controller. How does the CBA with 360 controller work on a FPS gamer on the PS3? Pretty damn good. My 360 controllers are equipped with KontrolFreek's FPS Joystick and GelTabz for that added grip. There was no lag and the accuracy was spot on. Luckily, the developers gave the gamers the ability to map the controls to their likings. Some games dont even have this option so you would be stuck with their awkward controls.
Conclusion: Overall, the XCM Cross Battle Adapter works great in allowing you to use Xbox 360 controller on the PlayStation3. However, there is no motion sensing since 360 doesnt have one built in, requires a wired controller and there is no rumble support! The TURBO feature is a nice feature but I barely used it. The price for this adapter is mixed feelings for me. I think its worth the $50 because I can use my 360 controller but the lack of rumble and having to use a wired controller makes me think that it should cost $30.
But for you Dual Shock lovers and own a Xbox 360, dont worry, XCM will be releasing Crossfire Battle Adapter. This will allow you to use your DS controller on the 360. Be sure to check back as we'll have a full review on it as well.
Quality/Usability: The XCM Cross Battle Adaptor is the first of its kind, allowing you to connect your wired Xbox 360 controller to use on the PlayStation 3. This is the adaptor many gamers have been waiting for, due to the Xbox 360’s superior triggers. The adaptor also features a rapid fire/turbo option that can come in handy in a few games. The Cross Battle Adaptor is very easy to use, being Plug-N-Play. Once I plugged the adaptor into the PS3, and the Xbox 360 controller into the adaptor, an LED lit up and within a few seconds I was able to navigate the XMB.
On to the games…
Racing - WipeOut HD
The controls for Wipeout HD felt suitable and I was able to get 2nd place in my first play through. The only issue I had was that the analog sticks were not quite as accurate as on the Dual Shock 3, so taken corners can be a problem. Using the left and right shoulder buttons allowed me to compensate however.
Fighting - Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix
This is a game where the DS3 excels, and the Xbox 360 controller lags behind. Admittedly, although I’m not very good at executing the moves, I was even worse trying to pull off moves using the analog and dpad controls on the 360 controller. Stick with the DS3 for playing games which require a lot of precision button presses.
First Person Shooters - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare / Resistance 2
Because Call of Duty only has preset button layouts, I wasn’t able to feel fully comfortable with the controls, although I was still able to get first place in an online match. Resistance 2 on the other hand felt very natural, allowing me to map the buttons to my needs. This is the type of FPS that will work best for anyone who loves the feel of the 360 controller – and the very reason why the XCM Cross Battle Adaptor was created.
Conclusion: For those who love the feel of the 360 controller, the XCM Cross Battle Adaptor is the perfect accessory for their gaming needs.
Pro’s
It works
Plug-N-Play
Added Rapid Fire / Turbo option that works great for certain fighting games
Allows you to play FPS’s the way they were intended
Cons
No rumble
Only works with wired controllers
Games that require the use of sixaxis won't work
Some games only have presets, so you will have to cope with the button layout the developers give you

IGN has reported that multiple sources close to IGN that Nintendo is set to release Nintendo DSi in North America on April 4th with a retail price of $179.99.
Multiple sources close to Nintendo tell IGN that the company is gearing up to debut the anticipated successor to its DS Lite handheld during the first half of this year in America. More specifically, the company has allegedly relayed to its partners that DSi will ship stateside in early April, most likely on April 4. Insiders assert that they have been told the system will retail for $179.99 when it launches domestically.
Nintendo's DSi handheld looks similar to its predecessor, but boasts a built-in camera, an SD Card slot, internal memory, an improved user interface and access to DSiWare, an ever-expanding list of downloadable DSi games and content available over Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.
DSi released in Japan last November and presently retails in the homeland for 18,900 yen ($211 USD). More than a million gamers purchased the system through December 2008, according to overseas data tracking services. DS Lite, meanwhile, sells in Japan for 16,800 yen ($188), a cost difference of almost $25. If our sources are to be trusted, the price divide between the two systems in America would be much wider, as DS Lite currently retails for $129.99 stateside, approximately $50 cheaper than DSi's alleged U.S. price point.
In contrast to the Japanese market, where penetration of DS Lite has peaked, Nintendo of America may be planning to market DSi alongside the still-popular DS Lite, which would at least explain the different price points: one version for casuals and another for the core.
Nintendo of America said last October that it did not feel it necessary to release DSi in 2008 because its predecessor continued to sell at a phenomenal rate. Last year, NOA president Reggie Fils-Aime was also quoted as promising that DSi would not debut in America until sometime after the first quarter.
When contacted for comment, a Nintendo representative told us that the company does not comment on rumors and speculation. Although IGN verified today's story through three independent sources, we have filed the information as rumor until Nintendo makes an official announcement.
Following repeated rumors to the effect, Gamasutra has learned that Ziff Davis has sold its 1UP division to Hearst's UGO Entertainment, and is shutting long-running print magazine EGM in the process.
According to a statement received by Gamasutra, Ziff Davis Media has now officially announced the sale of the 1UP Digital Network to Hearst's UGO Entertainment division.
The sale includes 1UP.com, Mycheats.com, Gametab.com, and GameVideos.com, and specific financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
In association with this, Ziff Davis Media's EGM Magazine, a consumer game print mainstay since 1989, will be discontinued. The January 2009 issue will be the final printed issue.
"We believe this is a smart transaction for Ziff Davis Media that places these market leading assets and teams in a great environment poised for further success. The transaction allows us to pay down debt and shift our full focus to our core PCMag Digital Network business. We thank our 1UP team members for their contributions and wish them the best of success into the future", said Ziff Davis Media CEO Jason Young.
"Since we started UGO 11 years ago, we have served the gamer community and built a world-class online publishing platform," said J Moses, CEO of UGO Entertainment. "The acquisition of 1UP, with its authentic voice, tenured editorial personalities and bustling user community, allows us to expand our base of quality content and represents a major step forward in UGO's mission to become the leader in the games space."
According to information obtained by Gamasutra, around 30 employees of Ziff Davis' Game Group were laid off immediately following today's announcement, including the staff of EGM Magazine, but also some elements of the 1UP Network's web staff, including podcast and video producers.
In addition, Gamasutra has obtained a copy of the internal email sent to Ziff Davis employees by CEO Jason Young following the announcement, as follows:
Team:
We are announcing today the sale of our 1UP digital business to UGO Entertainment, a dvision of Hearst Corporation.
Over the course of the last 4 years we have built the 1UP sites into a top tier gaming digital destination. While our growth has been sharp, it has become apparent that more scale is necessary to effectively compete in this market segment.
We made the decision that the best path to putting our award winning 1UP brand and content in a more competitive position was to combine it with the operations of another publisher. We received much interest from other parties.
After a comprehensive process, this morning we completed a deal with Hearst Interactive, the owner and operator of UGO Entertainment. 1UP.com, MyCheats.com, Gamevideos.com, and Gametab.com will now all be part of the UGO Entertainment business. Many of our employees will travel with this business and become part of the UGO team.
With this transaction happening, we have also made the decision to discontinue publication of EGM. The January 2009 issue will be the final issue of the publication. With demand for print continuing to decline amongst both advertisers and readers and the content being produced by 1UP no longer available for use in the publication, it simply did not make sense for us to move forward with this business any longer.
We will continue to operate the Filefront business as a part of the PCMag Digital Network. In the coming months we will determine the best ways to leverage the scale and functionality of this digital property to expand our business position.
The Ziff Davis position in the gaming market has been significant and important to our company and the market itself. While many of our assets in the PCMag Digital Network (including Filefront now) will continue to cover this market, it's important that we celebrate all that we have achieved over the last 25 years.
Our leadership in print for decades with titles like Computer Gaming World and EGM which in turn translated into the build out of one of the leading digital gaming media assets in 1UP are prime examples of the skill, passion, and expertise of our teams.and what they achieved.
It's incredible to compare the 1UP.com of today versus that of 12 months ago. I want to thank everybody in our Game Group for their important contributions over the years.
For Ziff Davis Media, our attention and focus now shifts squarely to the PC Mag Digital Network. The proceeds from this transaction will be used to pay down debt. One of the primary objectives of our business plan is ensuring that we have plenty of room to service our debt obligations into the future, and manage for growth in what will be a challenging year in the advertising market.
While the market will be tough, we are confident our position is well aligned to where the demand is most active. We move forward as a 100% digital business with tenured brand position, and powerful capabilities to drive results for our customers. I look forward to sharing more updates in the coming weeks.
Some gamers find the combo attacks in many games are hard to execute on a regular basis. You may need to combine 4-8 different button attacks with the proper timing to pull special moves. (Example: Y + Y + X + L + R + A + Y + B) With a normal controller this task is nearly impossible. The XCM Dominator Joystick solves this problem, and lets you execute these combos with ease. Just program the keys to a special button and then you only need to press that button to pull off those special moves.
The XCM Dominator Joystick includes 2 very special features: Combo Attacker and Independent Rapid Fire. This will allow you to dominate your opponents with ease. With these 2 features in hand fighting games will never be the same again!
The joystick will be available January 2009. No announcement on how much this will cost.
The XCM Cross Battle Adapter for the Playstation 3 will be making its debut here within the next couple of weeks. It is an adapter to allow you to connect your Xbox 360 wired controller to your Playstation 3 console for use with PS3 games.
Product Mockup, not actual image of product, just a preview of what it will look like.
Dream comes true! Finally an adapter to connect your wired Xbox 360 controller to your PS3 console!
For Xbox 360 controllers' fans, now you can use your 360 wired controller on PS3 console, plug and play, also built in rapid fire function.
For many reasons people really like the Xbox 360 controller. The look and feel are second to none. Now those same controllers can be used on your Playstation 3 console! For the first time you'll have the use of real triggers on your Playstation 3 console!

Overview : The XCM HDMI Blaster will allow you to connect any Component Video Source to your HDTV via HDMI inputs to save those valuable Component Video Inputs for other devices or for use with sets that do not have component video inputs but do have HDMI inputs.
Features :
Finally an HDMI converter for older (hdmi-less) consoles that brings the analog signal into the digital age.
Converts your old analog signal to the new High Definition standard digital signal (HDMI).
Compatible with Wii, PS 2, Original Xbox consoles, Gamecube, PSP Slim and more.
Also compatible with any component (YbPbR) signal (ie: DVD Player, DVB, Cable Box, Satellite Receiver, etc).
Experience the Brilliant, Colorful and Sharp video output on your HDTV.
Supports any device with VGA output. Input resolution for vga is 800x600, 1024x768.
Works on any HDTV or Monitor with HDMI or DVI inputs.
Fully automatic power supply management. When there is no input signal, the power supply will shut off automatically for energy savings.
Includes DVI to HDMI adapter.
Quality/Usability : XCM has been pumping out a lot of audio/video adapters for video game consoles whether it be VGA or DVI/HDMI. The newest product from XCM is the HDMI Blaster. The HDMI Blaster lets you converter analog signal to digital signal. It claims to be compatible with the PS2, Original Xbox, GameCube, PSP Slim and many more. However, older consoles dont have HDMI so you'll need a YPbPR (Component) cable. Since older consoles never came with these, you would have to purchase them separately whether they be OEM cables or XCM Multi-Console Component Cable v3.
In the package, you'll get the HDMI Blaster, HDMI Male/Male cable, HDMI to DVI Converter, Power cord and supply and instruction manual. Since I rarely read the manual to any of my electronics, hooking up the HDMI Blaster was pretty much straight forward and simple. You simply plug the component cable to the HDMI Blaster, plug the power to the wall and turn on your video game system and HDTV. The top of the HDMI Blaster contains a switch. This switch lets you toggle between Component output and VGA.
Component signals are outputted at 720p and resolution of 1024x768 on VGA. Although low even though you might have a display/console that can output 1080i/p, the quality is excellent. Since I got rid of my launch PS2 and original Xbox, I had to go and borrow one from a friend who actually likes to keep everything. I did however, have some games left since the PS3 and Xbox 360 are backwards compatible.
The colors were vibrant. From a normal and distant distance, the quality looks great. Of course, if you look up close, you will see jagged lines and pixels. Some will say that component will give just as good of a visual but if you're connecting component cable to the HDMI Blaster and connecting it via HDMI to the monitor, the quality is actually improved and better.
Since I was testing some older consoles, I thought I would try the Wii since it outputs at 480p. Yes, I can use component but wondered how it would look. After connecting the Wii to the HDMI Blaster, the quality was a lot better just like the older consoles. I was impressed. The PSP also produced great quality but was hampered with the length of the cord so you would be sitting close to the display.
Those looking to use VGA on this or computer monitor, I would not recommend this option. Using VGA would result in the quality being blurry and stretched out. If you're looking for a VGA adapter, I suggest taking a look at XCM 1080p Mega-Cool VGA Box. I would solely use the HDMI Blaster for component and DVI/HDMI.
Here is a video of the HDMI Blaster Converter in action...
Conclusion : Overall, the XCM HDMI Blaster is a great product for those looking to connect their old consoles and Wii via HDMI. Consoles connected via component will look great coming out of the HDMI Blaster. Unfortunately, the highest output for the HDMI Blaster is 720p and resolution of 1024x768 on VGA regardless if your console or monitor can display 1080i/p. Hopefully, XCM will release a 1080p version of this.
It seems there is a new motherboard for the Nintendo Wii. Whats different is that there is no more drivechip. No drivechip means you can not add a modchip. Here is a translation from CNGBA...
In December 2008 the first major Wii platform, which is available in the market the latest version of the Wii console has been great changes have taken place in-house. The original D2x with the master chip at the bottom of the D1A into one chip, into a GC2-D3! This means that all direct-reading all the chips can not be directly used in the new version of the Wii console on. Hackers have also re-examine the GC2-D3-chip pin definitions, and then modify targeted direct reading of the bridge chip approach.
We speculated that the new version of the Wii is currently using only soft approach to achieve the break to read CD-ROM version of the D (soft-crack on the situation to see http://wii.cngba.com/wii_pj/2008111956812.shtml). Players Network will continue to be concerned about the new version of Wii-related, please pay close attention to the player-player Wii channel network.
