Formerly called “Project Natal,” Kinect was revealed Sunday evening in a Cirque du Soleil performance on the eve of the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles.
LOS ANGELES – June 13, 2010 – Microsoft today unveiled Kinect for Xbox 360, a controller-free gaming device that Microsoft is positioning as an entirely new way to experience entertainment in the living room.
Previously code-named “Project Natal,” the Kinect label was released before the start of the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles (E3) as part of a Cirque du Soleil performance that was inspired by Kinect’s technology.
The slim black Kinect sensor plugs directly into any Xbox 360. Despite its small size, the Kinect device contains a camera, audio sensors, and motion-sensing technology that tracks 48 points of movement on the human body. It has the ability to recognize faces and voices.
With Kinect, game-players no longer need to memorize different commands for a hand-held control. “You are the controller,” said Mike Delman, corporate vice president of Global Marketing for the Interactive Entertainment Business. “You simply step in front of the sensor and Kinect sees you move, hears your voice and recognizes your face.”
The Cirque du Soleil show at Los Angeles’s Galan Center included few specifics about Kinect. Instead, it focused on the new experiences that it will enable. Microsoft will share more details – including the release date, and some of Kinect’s initial game and entertainment offerings – at a Monday morning news conference that will kick off E3, the gaming industry’s annual show-and-tell event.
Marc Whitten, corporate vice president of Xbox LIVE, said 2010 could be the biggest year yet for Xbox. “It’s an amazing year just when you look at the things people are expecting,” he said. “But we’re excited to also be announcing ways that make it simpler for everyone to enjoy the things we do. People who are intimidated by a controller or game pad will finally get to unlock some of the experiences that are possible in the living room, gaming
and non-gaming alike.”
Microsoft made a splash at E3 a year ago with a short video showing Kinect, and introducing the concept of controller-free gaming and entertainment on Xbox 360.
That video took off and subsequent demos of the technology spurred gaming followers to say Kinect could shake up the enormous (more than $10 billion a year in the United States) gaming industry.
Last January, for instance, CNET’s Josh Lowensohn wrote that the then-“Project Natal” device would be a “big adrenaline shot going into the heart of the Xbox 360.” After trying it out for himself last year, Gizmodo’s Matt Buchanan commented on the “remarkable sense of control” and “immersion.” And the U.K edition of IGN Entertainment said Kinect’s “tracking of movement is astounding, the detail of the recognition even more so.”
Some of what intrigued industry experts is that Kinect can perform full-motion tracking of the human body at 30 frames per second. It isn’t affected by what a user is wearing or what type of furniture is around. And it recognizes voices and faces.
Kinect was top secret until last year’s E3 video was released. After the conference it once again returned to “black box” status even inside the walls of Microsoft as the Xbox team worked to move it from prototype to product.
In keeping with that secrecy, there have been just two announcements on Kinect since last year at E3 – and one of them was releasing the name Kinect on Sunday night. The other occurred earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, when Microsoft announced that Kinect would be in stores this holiday season.
Much more news is expected Monday, Delman said. He believes Kinect will help Xbox get closer to reaching its goal of becoming the hub of games and entertainment in every living room. But while hard-core gamers are and will remain the cornerstone of Xbox and Xbox LIVE, Microsoft wants to use Kinect to reach a broader, new audience.
There are upwards of 40 million Xbox 360 consoles on the market. Kinect could help significantly increase that number because it appeals to traditional non-gamers such as young children, mothers, and grandparents.
The Sunday-night Cirque du Soleil show illustrated this concept by telling the story of a boy and his Xbox 360. He begins the show playing Xbox alone with a traditional controller, but when he and his family are introduced to Kinect, they all enjoy games and entertainment together.
“Some people don’t like controllers,” Delman said. “And Kinect makes the gaming and entertainment experience more organic and free-flowing, without any of the barriers that can sometimes keep people from participating.”
A commercial-free version of the Cirque du Soleil show will air on U.S. television on Tuesday, June 15, at 3:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. EDT on Nickelodeon, MTV and other channels. Later in the week, video of the event will be posted on www.xbox.com.

Our reviews aren't only to help gamers/consumers know more about the product before they buy, as we are your eyes. But at the same time, we're here to help manufacturers improve their products.
A prime example is our latest review on the XCM USB Vbox2 Advanced. The Vbox2 Advanced didnt come with much except for manual, box and Vbox2 Advanced adapter. In order for us to play on a bigger screen without straining our eyes and still be able to record, we had to purchase a RGB component cable and RGB component video splitter (approximately $12USD including shipping). After reading our review and how useful this setup was, XCM has decided to make their own component video splitter. Not only are they making their own, but they are also including it into all future Vbox2 Advanced purchases!
Before purchasing, I would contact online retailers to see if the component video splitter is included with the Vbox2 Advanced.
Unfortunately, I don't know when this package will be available but I would assume immediately. I did ask XCM about those who have already purchased the Vbox2 Advanced. I suggest you contact the online retailer you purchased from and see if you can work something out for the XCM Component Video Splitter but it may require you to pay additional shipping. If nothing can be worked out or if you are only interested in the component video splitter in general for other video uses, you may be able to purchase this separately. Retail price is about $6USD according to XCM. Again, you will need to contact online retailers to see if they carry this.
If we find links or more information about the Component Video Splitter, we'll post it first thing!
Here is a video of the XCM Component Video Splitter in action with the Vbox2 Advanced:
This setup is a lot easier than what I had purchased but it does look a little bulky. But for $6USD (final price undetermined), I'll suffer with the bulk and save me some money.

Our good friends over at Penguin United is getting into the FPS market with their own version of the keyboard and mouse adapter known as Eagle-Eye Converter. The Eagle Eye is an adapter which allows you to use a Keyboard and Mouse as your controller for PlayStation 3. It simply maps out the PS3’s controller scheme to a standard USB Keyboard and Mouse, ideal for First-Person Shooting games such as Call of Duty, Battlefield, Killzone, and many more. It’s also useful for RPG games like Dragon Age, Demon’s Souls, Final Fantasy, etc. You can also set Turbo Mode for the mouse and keyboard controls that correspond to the X, O, TRIANGLE, SQUARE, R1, R2, L1 and L2 buttons, to give you an edge.
This will be bring some competition to XCM's XFPS Rateup Adapter. The Eagle-Eye Converter doesnt look as sleek as the Rateup Adapter but I guess we can't judge a book by its cover. So we'll have to see how well this works when its released.
It is to launch at E3 2010 for about $49.99 which is half the price of XCM's XFPS. However, you can simply provide them with your name, email, and delivery address to be added to their product alert list. They will notify you immediately when they have this product in stock. You will also receive a $10 coupon with your notification email.
In the mean time, take a look at two videos:

The new Guitar Hero: Warriors Of Rock will bring 90 new tracks and some additional game modes. But the biggest addition is the controller redesign and the ability to be able to customize it.
All Guitar Hero games will continue to be backward compatible with older guitars—all of the buttons remain unchanged—the new wireless controllers have consolidated all of the electronics into the neck and fretboard, leaving the body free of any responsibilities beyond aesthetics.
Since there are no integrated circuitry built into the body, you can swap them out freely without any problems and they attach to the fretboard like wings. The shot above is the standard controller that will come with the game. This second guitar is a Gamestop-exclusive design, which will be available to those who preorder Warriors of Rock in addition to the body that everyone else receives:
Even without the guitar body wings attached, you can still play with the fretboard. The new guitars will be available for Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii versions of Warriors of Rock. There is no pricing for any of the components.

- Charging hour: about 3 hrs
Package includes:- Charger platform x 1 pc
- Charger cap accessories x 2 pcs
- 2-to-1 USB power charge cable x 1 pc
Quality/Usability : With wireless magnetic induction revolutionizing the way we charge our portable devices, who needs wires or wall chargers anymore? To charge a PS3 controller, you would need to connect it via USB cable to either your computer or PS3. Dragon has released a magnetic induction charger for the PS3 controller. Included is the charging platform, 2 charger caps and 2-to-1 USB cable.
To connect the charger caps, there are 2 ways to hold it in place. The first is just plugging it to the USB port and thats it. This allows quick removal if needed. The second way still requires you to insert it into the USB port but if you plan on keeping it on the controller and not removing it, there is a spring loaded clip on the inside of the charger cap. Simply pull this out and place it at the bottom of the controller. If you let go, it springs back into the charger cap. My only complaint about the cap is that its hard to pull out the clip. There is a groove to allow your fingers to pull it out but it wasnt big enough and if you have big fingers, you'll definitely have problems. I had to use a small object to help me pry it out. Once locked in, the charger cap is held in place pretty well. It does add about an inch to the back of your controller but is not in the way of your fingers. To remove, just pull the clip down, slide it back and pull it out of the USB port.
The charging platform is very thing and not bulk. The platform measures approximately 8 inches x 6 inches which just barely fits 2 controllers and has a blue LED status indicator and DC 5V input. To power the charging platform, you would connect a 2-to-1 USB cable. I do not know why there are 2 USB cables. I have tried plugging just one USB plug and the blue LED status indicator still lit up. Whether I have 1 or 2 USB plugs plugged in, it still charged the PS3 controller. Maybe the extra USB plug provides extra power? Even so, it takes about 3 hours to charge a fully depleted controller whether you're using one USB or both.
Once plugged in, the moment you place your controller on top of the platform, the LEDs on the controller begin to blink to show that its charging. No matter how you have the controller positioned, its still able to charge.
Whats great is that even though the charger cap uses a micro-USB, with a little bit of creativity, I was able to make my own PowerMat and use my micro-to-mini USB cable, connect it to the charger cap and be able to charge my Blackberry. However, placing the charger cap on the platform to charge the Blackberry caused my Blackberry to pop up with a message saying that the some USB hubs might not provide enough power and to plug my Blackberry into a power outlet and reconnect my device or to connect to another USB port such as a different computer, USB hub or travel charger. Even with the message, the charging status icon on my Blackberry still showed. Maybe it wouldnt charge as quick as it would if it was plugged into a more powerful USB port.
This adapter can be purchased for as cheap as $1.22USD+shipping at Amazon.com.
Conclusion : Overall, the Wireless Magnetic Induction Charger worked great and charged the PS3 controller without the hassle of wires. However, there were a few complaints. When the 2-to-1 USB cable was plugged in, the blue LED light sometimes wouldnt come on. If it did come on, it would slowly fade away as if there was power and than there wasnt. What is causing this to happen is the DC 5V port and the USB cable is poor connection. I had to push the plug in a certain direction so that there was power again. Unable to pull out the spring clip with out the assistance of long nails or a small item can be a hassle.
