We were sad to discover that many stores were raided yesterday in the USA for selling modchips. Due to all the recent uprise of hacks-out-of-the-box like Wii mods and Pre flashed Xbox mods and pre-flashed 360 consoles we feared this would probably happen.
We feel our mods are shipped in a legal format with Linux pre loaded and any other products we make contain no copyrighted code and no circumvention of copy protection.
However, due to these crazy times we have taken the decision not to supply any linux based modchips (X2 and X3) to any USA stores in future and we will be concentrating on non-modchip products that will benefit and add enjoyment to gaming in general.

Verbatim® Corporation and its parent company, Mitsubishi Kagaku Media (MKM), announced today the world’s first Mini Blu-ray Recordable/Rewriteable (BD-R/RE) media. Measuring three inches (8cm) in diameter, the new 7.5GB discs provide approximately one hour of continuous video capture time on a single side when high definition (1920×1080i) is used, and approximately two hours* of video capture time with images recorded at 1440×1080i. MKM Mini BD media will be available in August in Japan, where the new Hitachi BD-compatible camcorder will be launched. Verbatim will begin shipments to other parts of the world, including North America, when the new BD-compatible camcorders become available locally.
Verbatim Mini BD media combine with a BD-compatible camcorder to provide consumers with convenience features that hard disk camcorders cannot offer. With the ability to record priceless memories directly to a Mini BD disc, users can eliminate the time-consuming process of downloading captured video to their computer hard drive. They can also enjoy unlimited capacity by simply removing the disc from the camcorder and adding a new one.
Like Verbatim’s standard (12 cm) BD media, the new Mini BD discs deliver the highest read/write performance and unsurpassed longevity. Advanced technologies developed by MKM guard against deterioration in picture and sound quality--even with repeated recording and playback. By combining MKM’s proprietary recording layers and hard coat with its precision stamper and precision molding technologies during the manufacturing process, Verbatim BD media customers can be confident they have the best media on the market for their special memories and that they’ll be able to enjoy them for years to come.
The proprietary hard-coat finish on Verbatim BD media has superior anti-static and anti-scratch properties for added protection against scratches, fingerprints and dust particles that can occur during normal camcorder and home use.
Verbatim’s new Mini BD media is produced to the highest quality standards at MKM’s optical disc manufacturing facility in Mizushima, Japan. The Mizushima factory is well known for its expertise in producing blue laser media.

Even with the news of federal agents going after modders and pirates, its not stopping modchip makers. The new modchip is known as Wii-BOSS It officially releases today (August 3rd). This is a quick-solder Wii modchip solution with an external programmer and is open source, meaning you can flash any code to it via RS-232 (serial port).
“Almost all other conventional and homebrew modchips consist of two parts where the code is held, of which only the smaller EEPROM section of the chip can be changed easily. This EEPROM part of the code is very useful for small pre defined simple on or off selectable 1’s and 0’s and possibly a very small “additional feature” section. For example: Speed setting your chip or enabling multi-zone. However, if you want to update the entire chip, you need to physically remove the chip from the Wii, put it on a programmer, reprogram it, and then reinstall the chip into the Wii. This is not something you want to be doing constantly keep up with new optimized modchip codes for the Nintendo Wii.” - The Wii-BOSS is designed as a ‘quick solder’ chip with an external ribbon cable that can be left inside the machine, taped down on the back of the Wii, or even hidden inside the memory card bay. This chip can be fully programmed inside the machine with any code that supports the 12f629 PIC Microchip.
- The Wii-BOSS is also designed to allow external booting off the ribbon cable, therefore protecting the user against ever having to pull the Wii apart ever again if their requirements for a particular style of modchip change. External adapters to make competitor modchips and PC applications like DVD-Tool boot externally have already been designed and will be produced soon after the initial release of the premier product for a very minimal charge. These will likely be included in future kits at no extra charge.
- The Wii-BOSS even comes packaged with its own RS-232 port external programmer. Software for the programmer is open source and therefore also provided free. The programmer is based on an open source project and therefore could be ‘modded’, theoretically, to be used as a standard RS-232 PIC programmer.
- R.R.P. for the entire packed is USD$25 including the Wii-SP JDM programmer. The cost will obviously much cheaper in bulk quantities. Wholesale quantities start from just 2 kits.
At the time of writing the wii-boss supported the following codes (in no particular order):- Wii-Free - last stable release ver2.45
- YOASM - last stable release ver1.7
- Winja – last stable release ver2.0 (deluxe currently not available)
- Open-Wii - last stable release ver1.3
- Wii-skas - last stable release unknown
- MaxBoot - last stable release ver1.0 (redirection code for external booting)
Supported software for the programmer:

Federal customs agents Wednesday raided more than 30 businesses and homes in 16 states, looking for devices that allow pirated video games to play on Wiis, PlayStation 2s and Xboxes.
The alleged sale and distribution of illegal modification chips and copyright circumvention devices for the popular consoles and others included 32 search warrants in 16 states, said the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
ICE declined to release the names of those targeted but said they are allegedly responsible for importing, installing, selling and distributing foreign-made devices smuggled into the U.S.
Illegal chips and other devices used on gaming consoles violate the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998. Sales of counterfeit or illegally obtained games costs the industry about $3 billion a year globally, not including Internet piracy, estimates the Entertainment Software Association trade group.
Piracy losses for Nintendo and its game developers and publishers likely totaled $762 million last year alone, said Jodi Daugherty, senior director of anti-piracy at Redmond, Wash.-based Nintendo America.
Daugherty's five-person team coordinates global anti-piracy efforts for Nintendo's Japan-based parent company. Since April, the company has helped law enforcement agencies worldwide seize 61,000 counterfeit Wii modification chips, she said.
Wednesday's federal raids came after a yearlong investigation conducted by ICE's Office of the Assistant Special Agent in Charge in Cleveland, which coordinated with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Ohio and the Department of Justice's Computer Crimes and Intellectual Property Section. ICE said it also received assistance from companies and industry trade groups.
"Illicit devices like the ones targeted today are created with one purpose in mind, subverting copyright protections," Julie L. Myers, assistant secretary of Homeland Security for ICE, said in a release. "These crimes cost legitimate businesses billions of dollars annually and facilitate multiple other layers of criminality, such as smuggling, software piracy and money laundering."
Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft Corp. issued a statement applauding ICE's efforts to reduce piracy and protect the gaming industry's intellectual property. A company spokeswoman would not divulge Microsoft's individual piracy losses.
The raids were conducted in: California, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin.
Appleguru of OTBmods is one site to be raided (read here and read here). Theres also word that Modchipman, ModchipStore, Foundmy were also raided (you'll notice that modchips were removed from their online store).

A new virus-infected email is doing the rounds, carrying a worm along with its promised cargo of Super Mario Bros.
The email carries the Romario-A virus, and does actually launch a version of Mario Bros. It's one of a new breed of virus-carrying emails which run games to disguise the fact that they're up to no good. The Gonori-A trojan, for example, plays Minesweeper.
Romario-A doesn't seem to be terribly widespread just yet, perhaps because there are about eight million better ways to play Super Mario Bros, or perhaps because the body of the email, "Hi There, Do You Like Mario Bross ? Test it, and you'll like it ;] !".

The WiiControl is one modder's solution to avoid overheating when WiiConnect24 isn't running a fan. An external LCD displays the internal temperature at all times. If the heat rises past 35°C, the Wii's fan kicks on just like it should have in the first place.
Here is a video of it in action as well:

We're alive and kicking! Last Wednesday the server was running fine but there was a problem with MySQL, now normally the server fixes itself, thanks to the work Martin64 did on it to reset itself if the need arises. But it didnt reset itself which was strange. DCEmu tried to reboot using putty but they couldnt connect.
Our server admin and all around great guy Martin64 was away on holiday vacation in London last week and only arrived home yesterday. Tickets were sent into the hosts but discussing the problem with Martin64 he was told the best solution was to backup and restore again. He has been running tests on the hardware to diagnose the problem but as of this time no clue as to what caused the hard drive to go into ReadOnly mode.
With that said, Martin64 has pretty much gotten everything back to normal and we can continue to bring you more news and reviews.
Sorry for the downtime and any problems this may have caused.

The R4 Team has released the long awaited loader update for their R4 DS slot-1 card. There are lots of fixes and improvements in this version, such as soft-reset fixes for certain games, the ability to toggle in-game cheats on/off in real-time, updated Moonshell and download play support has supposedly been fixed for all games, but this hasn't been tested/confirmed.
- Solved the soft reset of some games, for example: 1158 Zelda
- Solved the white screen issue of game 1209
- Adding the on/off option for real-time cheats switch
- Updated moonshell to v1.71 and supporting soft reset
- Full download play support (Please use trim_tool 2.0 to trim ROMs)
Have an M3 Simply and cant wait for the update to come out? Now you can take the R4 update and convert it to work on the M3 Simply.
What is the purpose of this?
R4DS and M3DSS use more or less the same firmwares, but they are region and manufacturer locked -- meaning that if you use M3DSS firmware on R4DS hardware it won't work, or if you use English firmware on Chinese Hardware, it won't work. My program patches these firmwares so that they can run on whatever you patch them for.
What are the risks?
There are none that I know of. No one has reported any problems and there is no way a patched _DS_MENU can do any >>permanent<< damage to your card. If your DS displays any error messages, simply delete the _DS_MENU.DAT and _DS_MENU.SYS (if it exists), and put your old firmware back on. The worst-case scenario is that your Micro SD will be corrupted, so always be sure to backup anything important before you upgrade (even if you're using official software).
Changes:
30/07/07
Added R4 1.11 to database
*UPDATE*
M3 Team has now released their new loader. The new features is the same as of that of the R4 (above). To download v1.07, you can download from their homepage.
