CycloWiz Modchip v1 (DMS/D2A)
Manufacturer: Team Cyclops
Site: Buy from Divineo US (v1) / Buy from Divineo US (v2) / Buy from Divineo China
Price: $30.00-$40.00
Overview : The amazing CycloWiz Mod Chip for the Nintendo Wii has arrived! The CycloWiz is possibly the easiest modchip to install on any system. A quicksolder pattern on the PCB board removes the need for wires. All you need to do us solder onto the designated parts and the installation is complete.
Not only is the CycloWiz easy to install, but this ModChip also has amazing features including Stealth Mode, the ability to play both WII and Gamecube backups, GameCube homebrew and imports. The CycloWiz also has an optional LED to let you know when the Mod Chip is ON or OFF.
Features :- Fully upgradable via DVD
- Easy installation(5 solder points / no wires required)
- Stealth Mode to keep the Mod Chip from ever being detected by the current Wii firmware
- Play both Wii and GameCube backup copies
- Play GameCube homebrew and Imports
- Built In audio-fix for GameCube backup copies
- Multidisc GameCube game support
- Supports both 8cm and 12cm discs
- Optional disable feature to turn the Mod Chip ON or OFF
- Multipurpose LED to let you know that the CycloWiz Mod Chip is on and working, if there is an error, or if it is off
Quality/Usability : Let me start off first by saying that this review is based on the first version (v1) of CycloWiz Wii modchip and on a North American (NTSC-US) Wii. All games tested during this review, we own the original games. CycloWiz v1 comes in a plain unbranded ESD bag. New modchips will come in a CycloWiz branded ESD bag. This modchip is only compatible with Wii's that have a DMS or D2A chipset. This will NOT work on a D2B chipset.
If you bought your Wii after January 2007 and it contains a D2B chipset and have a CycloWiz v1, you email Team Cyclops and they will exchange your CycloWiz for a v2. Also, during manufacturing, there was some chips that had their solder points bridged together. You can easily fix this by following their PDF guide. If not, they will also replace it for a new one.
The CycloWiz comes in a plain ESD bag but does not provide any protection during shipping (unless retailer protects it). The CycloWiz is basically a chip on a small thin PCB. The solder pads allows you to either quick soldering or wire installation. Wire installation is the best way to go because if for whatever reason you need to remove it, it is a lot easier and cleaner.
Installation : Before installing the CycloWiz, you must have at least some experience with soldering and have read their instruction manual which can be downloaded from here. As for me, I dont have any experience with soldering, so I had a friend install this for me. In order to install the CycloWiz onto your Wii, you must take it apart. Here is a tutorial on how to dismantle your Wii. You can also find other tutorials or even videos on the web.
Once you have dismantled the Wii, you must locate the points outlined in their installation manual. These points are where you will connect the soldering between the Wii and the CycloWiz. When soldering, you must remember to stay within the points and not to use too much solder or you may risk shorting out the chip as well as the Wii. When soldering the CycloWiz, you also have the option of installing 3 more wires which is then connected to a switch (sold separately). Any type of switch will do whether it be a push-in switch or a flip switch but the smaller the better. You can install the switch anywhere you want. It can be in the vent at the bottom of the Wii or you can drill a hole into the casing of the Wii, whichever is more convenient to you. This switch will enable you to upgrade your CycloWiz via DVD.
On the CycloWiz, there is an LED that will light up if you’ve installed the chip correctly. You would want to try the Wii out before closing it up by hooking the Wii back together without the casing or you will not be able to view the LED. This is a great way to tell you whether or not your installation was successful or not without having to reopen your Wii later on.
Wii Compatibility : With v1, compatibility of games were not that great. There were DRE (Disc Read Errors) and it took a couple of tries before the Wii can recognize the game. Some games even experienced heavy lag during gameplay. Playing imports is a hit or miss when it comes to playing on a different region. Some games will work and some games will not. But if you're playing in the same region such as NTSC-US (North America) and NTSC-J (Japan), there is not problem. With the great support from Team Cyclops, they have fixed these problems in the upgrades which will be explained further down.
Homebrew Compatibility : There are three ways to load GameCube homebrew; bootable disc, SDLoad and GCOS. Loading via SDLoad, you will need a SD Gecko adapter as well as an SD card. If using GCOS or a bootable disc, you can load the emulators and games on to a DVD and be able to load from them without having to use additional media. All emulation worked without a problem.
CYCLOWIZ UPGRADE
3.0B Firmware Features :- Direct boot of NTSC Wii imports on NTSC consoles (no patch needed)
- Direct boot of PAL Wii imports on NTSC consoles (no patch needed, partial compatibility)
- Direct boot of NTSC Wii imports on PAL consoles (no patch needed, partial compatibility)
- Runs imported GC games (partially without swap)
- Perfect compatibility (100% of games are working)
- Improved read (no more slowdowns)
- Compatible with DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW (no bitsetting required)
- Fully upgradable via DVD
- Direct boot of Wii backups
- Direct boot of GC backups
- Direct boot of homebrew in GC mode
- Possibility to put many GC games on just one disc (compatible with ALL formats)
- Build-in audio fix (no patch required)
- Compatible with Multi-Disc games for BOTH Wii and GC
- Stealth mode
FINALLY! After many delays, doubts whether or not the CycloWiz is upgradeable via DVD (from potential buyers and haters of CycloWiz) and more delays, Team Cyclops has finally released their much anticipated upgrade. You can download their latest upgrades here. As of this review, this is the latest upgrade provided by Team Cyclops. As you have read above regarding the Wii compatibility, 3.0B firmware has greatly improved the compatibility of games as well as some import games. No longer do you have DRE's but there are still import games that will not load on the modded Wii. Hopefully this will be fixed in the near future.
You must download 3.0B and burn it onto a DVD. As you upgrade the CycloWiz's firmware, you will be taken through a few steps which will check to see if you had done your installation correctly. But if you have gotten this far and have been able to use your Wii, you have nothing to worry about as this is just a safety percaution. Dont forget, in order for you to be able to upgrade the firmware, you must have a switch installed. You can purchase a switch from RadioShack or any store that sells electronic parts. To upgrade the firmware you must follow the instructions that is displayed on your TV set. This consists of having to flip/press the switch ON and OFF. It shouldnt take long to complete.
After upgrading the firmware, Team Cyclops has followed through on their promises. Games have a better compatibility, playing imports from a different region still has compatibility problem, as well as being compatible with DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW.
Conclusion : Overall, the CycloWiz does a great job at what it does. v1 for DMZ/D2A chipsets wasnt that great from the start but with the release of the new 3.0B firmware, this has helped and improved the chip dramatically. Too bad it took a long long time for Team Cyclops to release an upgrade. Some Wii owners were skeptical and even had doubts about the upgradeable DVD feature. This may have caused some potential sales. They should also improve the way they package the CycloWiz. ESD bags are great to prevent any internal damage to the chip but it would of been nice if they wrapped it in bubble wrap to prevent any external damage during transit. Having to upgrade with a switch (which they should include) can be annoying but at the same time, nerve-racking because one little mishap can potentially damage your chip and possibly your Wii as well.
Be sure to check back for our CycloWiz v2 (DMS/D2A/D2B) review which is compatible with all Wii's.

Features:- Supports all Wii regions (PAL, NTSC-U and NTSC-J)
- High quality PCB and components
- Comes in high Quality ESD bag
- Ready with pretinned wires
- Double-sided tape for easy fitting

Quality/Usability : SuperCard has re-released their DS ONE. This time with a new look, new packaging and improved quality. The DS ONE is a SLOT-1 cartridge similar to that of the R4DS and M3 Simply. Included with the DS ONE is a small manual on a slip of paper as well as a microSD card reader. Unfortunately, no CD with drivers or file were included so you would have to go to their website to download the latest files. Here is another alternative site to download the latest files. The download file will contain NDS files and a SCSHELL folder.
The quality is top-notch and very sturdy. Size is the same exact size of that of an original DS cartridge. Just like all SLOT-1 microSD cartridges, you simply insert your microSD through the top of the DS ONE. It also has a spring mechanism for ejecting the microSD. Transferring files to the microSD either with the included card reader or your own is a simple drag and drop procedure.
Once you have placed all the necessary files on to the microSD and inserted it into the DS ONE, its time to take it for a test drive. Upon booting up the DS, you are greeted with a splash screen. Unlike the R4DS and M3 Simply where all your files are viewed at the top of the screen, the DS ONE is all at the bottom. That means you can do all your selecting and changing with the stylus rather than the directional pad and buttons. The graphic user interface (GUI) is customizable and resembles that of the Moonshell. On the touch screen, you are given four menus to choose from:
- Saver - manually change the size of the .SAV file to 4K / 64K / 512K / 2M / 4M
- Other -
- Enable GBA Union: links between GBA and NDS games to unlock bonus content, such as new characters, or levels for example.
- Set SC to Rumble Mode: allows you to use SLOT-2 SC Rumble to be used as a rumble pack.
- Display Chinese Name: displays in Chinese characters.
- Save Menu Option: saves your current settings to the global.ini file for future use.
- SuperKey: acts as a PASSME so you can boot a SLOT-2 card.
- AUTO Set SD Speed: runs a test program to determine microSD data speed.
- Enable Patch: allows you to Normal Read/Fast Read, SaveIN DS/SaveIN SD, Enable Reset and Enable Cheat
- Option -
- ICO Modality: you can set how you want your icons to be displayed (big, small or text)
- File Sort: sort files by alphabetically or modified date
- Language: select your default language either English or Chinese to be displayed
- SD Speed: manually set the microSD card speed
- File Info: show or hide the information pop-up box that displays the ROM’s scene number, full name, save type & icon. This is displayed whenever you highlight a ROM.
- About: displays Moonshell info and credits
- Help - basic informations on how to use Moonshell
I have only tested a hand full of ROM's and homebrews that I loaded on to the microSD, and they all loaded and saved without problems.
Conclusion : Overall, the SuperCard DS ONE SLOT-1 can compete with the R4DS and M3 Simply. What I like about the DS ONE is that I can do all my selecting on the touch screen rather than use the directional pad and buttons to do all my selecting and viewing on the top screen like the R4DS and M3 Simply. The price is slightly higher than that of the R4 or M3 Simply. They should of also atleast included a CD with some files..even if its not the latest version. You can purchase a 1GB for as low as $10! It looks like the rumors were true. Responding to retailer and consumer demand, SCEA has confirmed to GameDaily BIZ that it will no longer sell the 20GB model of the PlayStation 3 in North America. SCEA's Dave Karraker said that they have decided to focus on the 60GB version.
Over the past couple weeks, a number of sites have reported on what seemed to be a discontinuation of sorts for the $499 20GB model of the PlayStation 3. A number of retailers, both online and brick-and-mortar had all but stopped selling it recently. In fact, even Sony's own SonyStyle e-tailer no longer listed the 20GB version for purchase. When pressed for comment, Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) originally denied any change in their SKU strategy. Today, however, it's a different story.
Dave Karraker, Sr. Director, Corporate Communications at SCEA, issued GameDaily BIZ the following statement: "At launch, we offered two separate models of PlayStation 3 to meet the diverse needs and interests of our PlayStation fan base. Initial retail demand in North America was upwards of ninety percent in favor of the 60GB sku, so we manufactured and shipped-in accordingly.
"Due to the overwhelming demand for the 60GB model from both retailers and consumers, we have ceased offering the 20GB model here in North America. In addition to the larger internal hard drive, the 60GB PlayStation 3 features added storage media slots and built-in Wi-Fi not found in the 20GB system. Based on retailer and consumer feedback, we have decided to focus our current efforts on the more popular 60GB model."
Karraker also pointed out that the limited supply of 20GB models still out in the channel will continue to be sold at $499 until the supply is depleted. Furthermore, current 20GB owners or future purchasers of any 20GB models that are left will still be "100% supported with software and services, since all PS3s have the same basic architecture (unlike if MSFT were to stop selling their Core system, which would allow publishers to actually use their hard drive for gaming purposes, leaving the Core user out in the cold)," said Karraker.
So while Microsoft continues to expand its hardware offerings having recently announced a third SKU, the soon-to-be-launched Xbox 360 Elite, Sony seems to be going in the opposite direction, consolidating their hardware production for just one model – the model that offers the most functionality.
As for Europe and Japan, Europe has only been selling the 60 GB version from the start "and probably took that route after seeing the huge demand we had here in the U.S.," Karraker said. Japan, on the other hand, continues to offer both the 20GB and 60GB, and there's "no word from them on changing their sku mix."

Nintendo of America raised its voice in support of efforts by the U.S. Trade Representative to pursue formal consultations with China regarding enforcement of international copyright laws. Nintendo has always been one of the most persistent voices in the industry about the dangerous impact of piracy. In the past four years, 7.7 million counterfeit videogame products were seized from more than 300 factories across China. In 2006 alone, the estimated loss incurred by Nintendo and its subsidiaries due to piracy was $762 million.
China has cemented itself as the foremost producer and exporter of pirated Nintendo products, as well as having the largest domestic consumption. There have been substantial efforts on the part of the Chinese government to curb this problem, but even so there has only been one criminal prosecution of a piracy case. Many production sites have gotten away with only the most limited of punishments, and were able to resume operation immediately after products were seized.
"Nintendo will continue to work with the U.S. government while aggressively pursuing counterfeit Nintendo products in China," says Jodi Daugherty, Nintendo of America's senior director of anti-piracy. "We're pleased the U.S. government is pushing China to comply with its trade commitments in an effort to protect the lifeblood of the copyright and trademark industries."

Guinness World Records plans to launch a new videogame edition of its famous book of records, bringing together a wide range of game-related achievements and information.
Called "Guinness World Records - Videogame Edition 2008", the book will include reviews of the 20 biggest games of the year (8/10), record scores and fastest times, hardware profiles, sales figures and technical achievements made by individual games (e.g. how Viva Piñata is best).
The book will also answer questions such as which pro gamers earn the most money, what's the single highest score ever in a game, and which is the most successful console of all time.
Somewhat undermining the book's credibility will be celebrity consultant and GamesIndustry.biz editor Ellie Gibson, so expect at least fourteen Star Wars games and probably a category for "Fittest Developer".
"We reintroduced videogaming world records to our annual book a few years ago, and it’s proved to be one of the most popular sections with our core readers. It makes sense, therefore, to dedicate an entire annual to the subject," said Guinness World Records editor in chief Craig Glenday.
"Our record researchers are already scouring the videogaming community for superlatives, and the vast number of games, gamers, developers and platforms mean that we have an incredible pool of content to dip into each year. It's going to be a very exciting project," Glenday added.
"The news that Guinness World Records has decided to produce a book devoted to games is great for both gamers and the industry," said Gibson. "It's another boost for the profile of gaming, and I'm very much looking forward to getting started."
The Guinness World Records - Videogame Edition 2008 will be officially unveiled on stand D505 at the London Book Fair, which takes place between 16th and 18th April.

SplitFish GameWare edgeFX Mouse/Keyboard Controller (PS2)
Review by: Lastblade aka kingoffighters
Provided by: DCEmu Reviews
Manufacturer: SplitFish
Site: Buy from Play-Asia
Price: $29.99
Overview : PS2 owners who have been asking for a better controller for their beloved FPS (all 2 of you), SplitFish has answered your prayers. edgeFX is a mouse/control pad hybrid controller that attempts to give you the type of control that PC gamers have been enjoying since the dawn of humanity (or circa early 1990s).
Quality/Usability : This controller claims that it will work with any game, so I am curious to see how it works with both FPS and non-FPS. Installation is as easy as plugging in any PS2 controller. The tricky part is putting the contraption on your lap since it has the mouse pad along with the one-handed control pad (let’s call it the “nunchuck”) for your left hand. To be honest, I never could get comfortable with this setup.
First game I tried is one of my favorite FPS, Black for the PS2. It is a great game and I have hopes that this controller will improve accuracy and speed. Both my accuracy and speed has gone DOWN from using this controller. The reason is that the mouse is basically emulating the right control pad (thus, it can work with any game and does not need special programming from developers to take advantage). There is a knob on the left control nunchuck that allows you to change the sensitivity of the mouse on the fly. This is actually very helpful to find how fast your mouse moves in relation to how far you push the right analog stick on a regular pad. However, even with the highest sensitivity, you are not moving any faster than pushing the right analog stick to the maximum. Of course, this is obvious since the mouse is emulating the right analog.
Next game I tried is Killzone. This game is noticeably slower than Black so I was doing a bit better with the mouse. After tweaking the sensitivity knob, I was doing better than Black but still not turning around as fast as I want (again, this is inherent in the game itself and not a fault of the controller). The thing is that I did not want to turn faster with a regular control pad, but I do with a mouse. I suppose my own history of playing FPS with a mouse colored my expectation of how a mouse should work on a PS2 game (even though none of them are programmed with this mouse in mind).
On the nunchuck controller, there is a very nice analog stick for movement and a cross pad. One very cool button is a “focus” button that slows your controller down. You can snipe much easier with this button held down. I wish this button was incorporated in all FPS.
Finally, I tried to play a non-FPS game, I figure a setup like this would be ideal for RPGs so I tried Final Fantasy XII and it worked quite nicely. I actually enjoy using this controller for this type of games over a RPG. I would not recommend playing an action/platform game with this setup though.
Conclusion : Overall, the edgeFX controller is a decent alternative for the PS2 FPS library. It does NOT make you turn faster like a real mouse would (unless developers actually develop a game with this mouse in mind, which won’t happen with the last days of PS2), but does make it more intuitive if you are used to mouse + keyboard control.
I would also like to give a big THANKS to bandit (DCEmu Reviews) for letting me review this product. I hope everyone enjoyed my review.
