Almost a third of PlayStation 3 owners are "seriously considering" buying a PlayStation Vita.
The finding comes from Playr2, which asked 1321 PS3 owners about Sony's new handheld, which will be on shelves tomorrow.
Thirty-two per cent of respondents said they were "seriously considering" buying a Vita in the near future, according to Eurogamer. Twenty-two per cent of those intend to buy the system within a week of tomorrow's launch.
It's a limited sample, obviously, but will be well received at Sony - especially given that only half of that 32 per cent previously owned Vita's predecessor, PSP.

Filing for creation of 'a real-time three dimensional interactive environment using a depth sensing device'

Sony is building its own Kinect-like motion sensing prototypes, newly released patent files reveal.
As reported by PlayStation lifestyle, the patent was filed in October 2011 to protect the creation of a “real-time three-dimensional interactive environment using a depth sensing device”.

It also describes that the device “includes obtaining depth values indicating distances from one or more physical objects in a physical scene to a depth sensing device.”
It is important to note however that by convention, numerous patent filings by games companies do not materialise into final products.

Bethesda game director Todd Howard has spoken about the bugs affecting Skyrim, particularly on PS3, admitting that many gamers saw problems but that the trouble was "not nearly as bad as it seems".
Speaking to Industry Gamers, Howard said that the 1.4 patch, released at the weekend, should solve many problems experienced by gamers, but that many issues were impossible to predict.
"Statistically, it is not nearly as bad as it seems," says Howard. "Meaning, by all the internal and external data, this is our most solid release."
"It's also our most popular by a large factor, so we do have a lot of people on the PS3 who play the games a lot and their games are at a state that the game is just taxing the PS3 enough. That's a fact; so, it really wasn't until we were able to get save games from the users - because, literally, how they play the game over 100 hours - some of it, very little of it, we were able to reproduce and take care of on our own and a lot of it that you're seeing now, we weren't.
"So over the course of, like, December, the community helped us. We got their save games. We'd literally have to look in and say, 'What quests do they have running, what order? Oh, he's doing this. He's got these dragons here. This script is running. Why is it kicking out this many things?' And the 1.4 update is coming out today on the PS3 and it should - in our internal tests on those games - it fixes it, it takes care of it. But, going through this, we now know, there will still be - a smaller set, but there are probably still people we don't have their saved games and they have [other problems]."
Whilst the size and intricacy of Skyrim lead to obvious potential for conflicts and difficult to test issues, it's unlikely that Howard's comments will go down well with gamers who experienced the game breaking issues which afflicted the PS3 SKU.
Users reported stuttering, broken questlines, texture issues and other bugs, with many considering the game unplayable after a certain point. Howard, however, insists that they were in the minority.
"People will say, 'When your save game hits this size [you're affected]' but that's totally not true, because you have a much larger set of people who are fine. So it's not that. It has to do with how many things have you done in the game in what order. What's running right now? And because the game is so dynamic, it does tax the PS3 in a different way. Obviously, we wish we had all that information beforehand. Some of that is just very difficult to get."

The identity of this year's Call of Duty title may just have been outed by the French arm of online retailer Amazon.According to a Gameblog report, as translated by Gamespot, a product page for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 appeared on the site this week before quickly being taken down.Gameblog then claimed that Activision demanded it remove its original report too. When it refused to do so, the publisher apparently rescinded an invitation to a Transformers: Fall of Cybertron preview event and pulled advertising bookings it had with the site. The publisher has thus far declined to comment.A direct sequel to 2010's Black Ops would be no great surprise - it's still the best-selling game of all time on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.Activision has confirmed that a new Call of Duty title will hit shelves later this year, and promised that it will feature "meaningful innovation" for the FPS series.

I ain't scared of no ghost, but I am completely terrified by the idea of invisible soldiers. There could be one beside me right now and I wouldn't even know it, at least not until his translucent knife perforated my windpipe with extreme prejudice. This first entry in Ghost Recon: Future Soldier's "Inside Recon" developer diary series elaborates on the animation and motion capturing techniques used to create the game, as well as the major role that cover plays during a firefight.

While you guys watch that, I'm going to go spread legos all over the floor of my apartment as an anti-ghost-soldier countermeasure. Those things smart when you step on 'em barefoot.

The PlayStation business is under renewed pressure to perform for Sony Corporation in a year when the company is expecting to make a ¥220 billion ($2.9 billion) loss.
PlayStation's Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida admitted there's a renewed emphasis on the division to perform, but the group is also motivated by the leadership of new Sony CEO Kaz Hirai and his years of experience in the games market.
"I'll be remiss if I say they won't be because we're part of the big Sony corporation. But when you listen carefully to the announcements by Kaz Hirai, he clearly said that Sony going forward has a two pillar business. We have a really strong vertical integration, one is the digital imaging, with digital and video cameras and the other is games," Yoshida told GamesIndustry.biz.
The appointment of Kaz himself is a clear message. The way he has developed software, hardware and services together, I'm sure that's how he's going to develop the business.
    Shuhei Yoshida, Sony

Yoshida said he is expecting continued investment in the PlayStation business - one of Sony's most successful brands and due in the spotlight this month with the imminent launch of the PS Vita handheld.
"Coming from Kaz, saying these two businesses are the pillars of the company, it's a huge expectation for us to kind of lead the business and so I would expect Sony would allow us to invest for the future.
"It's clear messaging, the appointment of Kaz himself is a clear message. The way he has developed software, hardware and services together, I'm sure that's how he's going to develop the business."
Kaz Hirai replaces Howard Stringer officially on April 1, and has already announced plans to grow the core games, smartphone and digital imaging businesses, as well as try to turn around Sony's struggling television business.
For Yoshida and other PlayStation executives, there's a sense of relief that senior Sony corporate staff now accept the games business, when even the rejection of ideas at boardroom level will be cushioned by Hirai's fundamental understanding of the games market.
"Because my office is in Sony headquarters I have more exposure to the other Sony divisions, it's fun to find new allies in different departments, but there are lots of layers of Sony executives on the electronics side that do not necessarily understand what we were doing in the games business," offered Yoshida.
"It was a scary thought when I had to present some investment and business plans to executives and I worried they might ask questions that might not be relevant, I was concerned that these people might be making decisions over our business.
"So it's a big relief and a very energising thing that we see Kaz promoted." He continued: "He's a very business orientated person but he also understands what is most important for our business and what our strategy is. Even when he says 'no' he understands our business, which is better than hearing 'no' from other executives who do not understand the video games business."
The PlayStation Vita launches in Europe and the US next week.

The size of save files was not the cause of framerate issues affecting PS3 players of The Elder Scrolls V: Skryim, Bethesda claims.
Speaking to Kotaku, chief game designer Todd Howard said that the problem, which reduced PS3 framerates to single figures in places and was finally patched last week, was in fact far more complicated in nature.
"The way our dynamic stuff and scripting works, it's obvious it gets in situations where it taxes the PS3," he said. "And we felt we had a lot of it under control. But for certain users it literally depends on how they play the game, varied over a hundred hours and literally what spells they use.
"No it's not [connected to save files]. That's the common misconception. It's literally the things you've done in what order and what's running. Some of the things are literally what spells do you have hot-keyed? Because, as you switch them, they handle memory differently."
Howard claims that the problem was largely fixed with the 1.2 update, released in November, though there are plenty of PS3 players who would dispute that. Bethesda asked those still having problems to send them their save files for analysis. Patch 1.4, released last week, appears to have finally taken care of the problem for the vast majority of players.
"Now that we've been through this, we're not naive enough to say we've seen everything, because we have to assume we haven't," Howard said. "There are still going to be some people who have to come back to us and say: 'Okay, my situation is this.' Send us your save game. We literally need to look at what you have running.
"We [had] one guy who had seven dragons on the other side of the world, and a siege about to happen in this city and another 20 quests running. And, okay, this is what it's trying to do and it's having a hard time running that."
All of which is fine, but Bethesda did little to correct that "misconception," asking affected players to send in their save files for analysis and with each patch addressing the issue causing save files to reduce in size.
Howard also insisted: "We did a ton more testing this time around, so the game is definitely our most solid release regardless of platform." It's all relative, admittedly, but how many Skyrim players go through the game without a sprawling list of open quests dotted all over the map? It's the way the game is meant to be played so should it not, therefore, have been tested in the same way?

No need to pay for the same content twice' says Sony.

A number of games available for purchase on the playstation store will be playable on both PlayStation 3 and PS Vita for one price.
Those who have already purchased any of these games will be able to play them on both systems as of February 22.

Sony says the move is to highlight the cross-platform capabilities of the PS Vita, which enables purchasers of the handheld system to play with PS3 owners over a network.
The PlayStation Vita launch has drawn a deal of criticism for Sony, who have seen a series of brutal quarters and had their credit rating devalued.

Tool is designed to make PlayStation Move development more accessible.

Sony has announced that Move.me, a development tool that allows use of the PlayStation Move as an input device for PC, is now available in Europe and the UK.
Previously available only in the US, Move.me is targeted for use by academics, researchers, and hobbyists, and is designed to make development for the PlayStation Move more accessible.

Sony highlights the capabilities of the device for use in research and experimentation in non-traditional game and non-game concepts.
"Move.me is already being used by various universities in North America in cutting edge physical therapy and creative design projects," said Maria Stukoff, Head of Academic Development and Partnerships at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. "We’re eagerly anticipating what else is possible now we’ve extended its availability.”
A BETA trial is already underway among academics and researchers across Europe.
