In 2007, while Infinity Ward was building the first Modern Warfare, Underground Development began working on a top-secret, third-person shooter in the Call of Duty franchise, titled Devil's Brigade, Vox Games reports.Based on a real-life group of ruthless, almost superhuman American and Canadian soldiers in World War II, Devil's Brigade was Activision's fallback if fans didn't get the switch to a contemporary setting with Modern Warfare.

Devil's Brigade focused on tactical strategy, stealth missions and super-athletic Special Forces combat. The real Devil's Brigade scaled a mountain carrying more than 50 pounds of supplies and weapons to defeat the camp below in two hours, and they were known for infiltrating German trenches and slitting soldiers' throats, slapping stickers that read "The worst is yet to come," in German, on the dead men's helmets. Underground Development wanted to capture this essence for the game version of Devil's Brigade.

But, as history shows, players did understand Modern Warfare. When Devil's Brigade was ready for its final green light, it got lost in the shuffle of Infinity Ward's success and the Blizzard/Vivendi merger. Activision closed Underground Development in 2008 with nary a whisper about Devil's Brigade. For now, we have some screenshots of the game and the memories of throat-slitting action that could have been.

One-year Xbox Live Gold memberships are $36 right now on Amazon, down 40 percent from the standard price of $60. Three-month subscriptions are 23 percent off, for $19.16 now as well.

Newegg is matching Amazon's deal on 12-month memberships, offering up to five per customer at $36 a pop. Not that you have to buy five but, really, if you're going to buy Gold today, it might as well be for half a decade at 40 percent off.

We're trying to be careful not to get people too excited and then have to go and disappoint them'

Gabe Newell is acutely aware of how frustrating the studio’s lack of news on Half-Life 3 is for fans, the Valve boss has said.
In an interview with Penny Arcade, Newell said that after the notorious development delays of Half-Life 2, the developer was wary of hyping up a new title too early on.

“We’re acutely aware of how much we annoy our fans and it’s pretty frustrating to us when we put them into that situation,” he said.
“We try to go as fast as we can and we try to pick the things that we think are going to be most valuable to our customers and if there’s some magic way we can get more work done in a day then we’d love to hear about it.”
He added: “Part of the reason that we backed off talking so much about what was happening in the future is that when we’ve done that in the past, you know, with Half Life 1 it was a year after we originally said it would be.

A new Xbox 360 dashboard update that went live in the US yesterday has given the Xbox Live Indie Games channel added prominence. The service is now visible on the "top level" of the Marketplace section right next to tabs for Xbox Live Arcade and Games on Demand. The November dashboard overhaul had hidden it behind an additional 'Game Type' button, causing a number of XBLIG developers to publicly voice their discontent at Microsoft's marginalisation of the service.A statement handed to Eurogamer by Microsoft today, and due to be posted on the AppHub Forums and XNA Community blog in due course, explained that the move reflected that feedback."As you've now noticed, the Xbox Live Marketplace was updated to change the way games are surfaced to customers," it read."Microsoft is continually working to better organise our digital game content on the platform and your feedback played a part in that."Part of this new organisation means that Xbox Live Indie Games now has a tile on the top level of the marketplace right next to Xbox Live Arcade and Xbox Games on Demand."Inside of the new Xbox Live Indie Games section, you'll notice that there are New Release, Top Download, A-Z, and Genre options, as well as a rotating carousel that shows off Kotaku's Picks, Contest Finalists, and can be used to house other content as desired."This update is something we are extremely excited about as it really brings Xbox Live Indie Games to a higher level of visibility in the dashboard. We believe these changes will help even more gamers find and experience the great offerings you've all developed for Xbox Live Indie Games."So, good news for XBLIG developers. However, there's one caveat. At present, the update has only been applied in North America. A Microsoft spokesperson was unable to confirm if or when the changes will roll-out in Europe.

The Indie Games section of Xbox Live has been a point of contention for indie developers since its launch, in part because the app was hard to find and confusing to navigate. Microsoft has since made improvements -- with the most recent dashboard update, even -- but a group of indie devs and industry enthusiasts are speeding up the process with a new app for Windows Phone, tentatively called the XBLIG Companion.

The XBLIG Companion scrapes the RSS feeds of XboxIndies.com and gathers the XML and CSV data for every applicable game, updating the app's listings as the games are updated themselves. XBLIG Companion will offer easy browsing of Xbox Indie Games' selection and will allow users to purchase games for their consoles directly from their phones.

Created by Casey Young and organized by Dave Voyles, XBLIG Companion is currently in beta testing -- anyone with a Windows Phone 7 can check out the prototype now by contacting Dave [at] ArmlessOctopus [dot] com, and leaving feedback right here. Now that wasn't so difficult, was it, Microsoft?

Multiple sources close to the project claim Microsoft's next Xbox console is codenamed Durango, Kotaku is reporting.
This is NOT a picture of Microsofts new consoleObviously it's a pretty ridiculous name, and not nearly as cool as Katana, which was the Dreamcast's codename, or Revolution, which is was Nintendo was originally calling Wii.According a quick Wikipedia search 'Durango' is a settlement in Spain; has been attached to Dodge and Ford cars; the pseudonym of the Probe 16 car featured in A Clockwork Orange; a type of a frisbee game; a Mexican football club; a vessel operated by the Mexican Navy; and an 1999 episode in the Hallmark Hall of Fame. Do with that information what you will...
Earlier this month, Xbox World magazine claimed Microsoft will include a Wii U-like touchscreen controller.
Other rumours have suggested the hardware will support Sony's Blu-ray format and may include measures to prevent second-hand games being played.

Remember those color problems experienced by some Xbox 360 users after last year's dashboard update? Microsoft appears to have fixed the issue in its latest system update, although it will take time for the fix to roll out across the associated apps -- we've been told this will happen over the next few months. Its Sony rival also rolled out its own (optional) update for the PS3 yesterday, improving "certain aspects" of the UI. The Xbox team promise that their update will also increase performance, but don't take their word for it; the update is rolling out now -- let us know how it goes.

Ubisoft has confirmed the ongoing development of Assassin's Creed III, which is set for release on October 30.

Host platforms weren’t announced, but the game is expected to launch on Xbox 360, PS3, PC and possibly Wii U. It will be the fifth core series entry in a franchise that has sold over 30 million units since the original debuted in November 2007.

The title was announced byUbisoft CEO Yves Guillemot during a third quarter conference call with investors. He said the “fabulous” looking project has been in development for three years and that Ubisoft is investing more money in the game than it has in any other series entry to date, IGN reports.

"Assassin's Creed 3 is the true next generation of both theAssassin's Creed brand and interactive entertainment/storytelling in general," Guillemot added, according to Joystiq.

While no further details have officially been announced, CVGrecently reported that the game is set to feature a new protagonist and be set during the American Revolution.

Earlier today, Ubisoft also announced a September 7 release date for Far Cry 3.

Oh you crazy, crazy marketers, what with your inability to line up announcement times and what have you. Adorable, we say! For instance, Sega's big reveal of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 probably wasn't intended for as inauspicious a venue as the Xbox Live Marketplace, but here we are with a whole mess of new screens and several new details about the game itself. A-dorable.

Anyway, according to the Xbox Live Marketplace listing, Sonic 4 Episode 2 will feature online and offline co-op play with Tails, all set in an "all new game engine" with updated physics. The blurb further promises "four brand new Zones" and a "new special stage." From the shots that were released thus far, it's looking like Sonic and Tails should pack an extra pair of snow boots!
